The story opens in a vibrant African-American community centered around Big Jim Bottoms' juke joint. This lively venue serves as the nucleus for entertainment and social gatherings, where laughter and music define the atmosphere.

The tranquility of the community is disrupted by the arrival of Samuel H. James, a charismatic new preacher. His magnetic presence captivates the townspeople, drawing them away from Big Jim’s juke joint and into the church.

Faced with declining business due to the preacher's influence, Big Jim becomes desperate to regain control over his patrons. He concocts a nefarious plan to undermine Samuel by staging scandalous photographs that implicate the preacher in unseemly acts.

Big Jim's scheme involves three attractive women whom he coerces into participating in the staged incidents. As he orchestrates this plan, he believes he can turn the tide of the community's loyalty back to his juke joint.

Unbeknownst to Big Jim, his adoptive mother, Aunt Caroline, discovers his malicious intentions. A strong and determined woman, she confronts him in an attempt to put an end to his devious plot, resulting in a fierce argument.

During their confrontation, Aunt Caroline suffers injuries that lead to a catastrophic collapse. The family dynamic shatters as Big Jim faces the grave reality of the consequences of his actions, culminating in Aunt Caroline's untimely death.

In the aftermath of Aunt Caroline's death, Big Jim manages to evade suspicion by attributing the tragedy to a mysterious burglar. He creates a narrative that allows him to maintain his façade and avoid the repercussions of his threefold betrayals.

As the days pass following Aunt Caroline’s funeral, Big Jim becomes plagued by haunting visions related to eternal damnation. His guilt manifests in terrifying ways, serving as a constant reminder of the wrongs he has committed against both his mother and the preacher.
