Jack Carter has been living in London for years, working for organized crime bosses Gerald and Sid Fletcher. His life is filled with crime and deceit, but he finds love in an affair with Gerald's girlfriend, Anna, which adds a layer of complexity to his criminal life.

Jack returns to Newcastle to attend the funeral of his brother Frank, who has died in a drink-driving accident. During the funeral, he encounters his teenage niece Doreen and his brother's mistress, Margaret, raising questions about the nature of Frank's death.

Unsatisfied with the official explanation of Frank's death, Jack begins his own investigation. He seeks out old acquaintances in Newcastle to uncover the truth behind his brother's demise and the potential involvement of the local mob.

Jack goes to Newcastle Racecourse looking for information from Albert Swift, a former acquaintance. However, Swift evades Jack's inquiries, leaving him frustrated and determined to dig deeper.

Jack meets Eric Paice, who is unwilling to divulge information regarding his employment. This encounter leads Jack to tail Eric, which ultimately directs him to the country house of crime boss Cyril Kinnear.

At Kinnear's estate, Jack confronts the crime boss in search of answers. Though Kinnear holds back vital information, Jack's interaction with him hints at deeper troubles involving his brother's death.

Back in town, Jack faces threats from henchmen aiming to drive him out. Instead of fleeing, he confronts and interrogates one of the henchmen, learning the name 'Brumby,' a clue leading him further into the mystery.

Jack tracks down Cliff Brumby, a businessman unaware of Jack's quest. Disappointed and feeling set up, Jack leaves abruptly, realizing that his search for answers is becoming increasingly convoluted.

Jack arranges a clandestine meeting with Margaret to discuss Frank's death. However, this meeting is interrupted as the Fletchers' men are onto him, forcing Jack into a dangerous situation.

Jack meets Glenda, who reveals critical information about Kinnear's dealings and Frank's murder. Kinnear’s attempts at business takeover are intertwined with the film that could expose him, raising the stakes for Jack.

Jack confronts Albert, learning that Frank's death was orchestrated by Kinnear and his associates. In a fit of rage for his brother, Jack takes Albert's life, turning the tide of his personal vendetta.

Jack is pursued by London gangsters after his violent outburst. In a chaotic shootout, Jack fights back fiercely, killing one of his assailants, but the violence intensifies his quest for vengeance.

Jack decides to abduct Margaret, using her as leverage against Kinnear. He contacts Kinnear, setting in motion a plan that will lead to a deadly confrontation.

In an ultimate act of vengeance, Jack tracks down Eric on the beach. He ensures Eric pays for his crimes, mirroring the methods used against his brother, culminating in a brutal demise.

After achieving his revenge, Jack is ultimately shot and killed by Kinnear's associate. His quest for justice ends tragically, reflecting the violent world he tried to escape.
