An intrepid explorer, Jungle Jim, threads through the Congo’s dense jungles when he spots a plane diving toward the river. He dives in to rescue the injured pilot, Ronald Cameron, who explains that he is tracking a missing biochemistry professor, Prof. Dunham, at the University of Cairo’s request. Dunham was last seen venturing into the jungle in search of a beast known as the Okongo, a creature revered by the local tribes for its glands thought to hold a rare drug.
From the tribal chief, Leta, they learn that Dunham and all the males of the Okongo tribe have been kidnapped by hunters who want to extract the drug from the Okongo’s glands. Jim, Cameron, and Leta press on toward the hunters’ hideout. Leta frees the captured Okongo, and it attacks one hunter during the chaotic rescue. In the ensuing struggle, Dunham smashes all the bottles containing the extracted drug, halting the hunters’ plans long enough for the trio to flee.
Their escape is marked by a blistering sandstorm that blankets the landscape, and Jim must face a gigantic desert spider in a tense battle before returning to tend to Dunham, who has been wounded by a hunter and is left in Cameron and Leta’s care. Dunham increasingly suspects that Cameron is the leader of the hunters, a realization that sours the uneasy alliance. Before long, the group is captured by Cameron and his henchmen, and Jim is forced to guide the hunters toward the main herd of Okongos.
When they finally reach the Okongo herd, the hunters are confronted by the armed wives of the male natives and by the Okongos themselves. Cameron manages to escape the confrontation but falls from a cliff and dies. With the threat defeated, Leta and the natives celebrate their hard-won victory, while Jungle Jim and Dunham prepare to move on, grateful to have survived the perilous jungle ordeal.
