When the charismatic “Jesus freak” who founded a church dies of AIDS, his memory is erased. Lonnie Frisbee, a 1960s hippie who said he met God during an acid trip, became an itinerant evangelist in Southern California, drawing thousands to Christianity. In the 1970s he became the face of the Jesus movement, appeared in Time and Life, and helped launch Calvary Chapel’s global ministry.
