Laura is a young Russian woman entangled in a complicated relationship with Alan James, a renowned rock ‘n’ roll producer residing in Memphis, Tennessee. Their story began when Laura met Alan while working as a translator at a music conference in Moscow. Together, they share a young son, Sam. While Alan is characterized as arrogant, a heavy drinker, and a notorious womanizer, Laura often feels reduced to the status of a mere trophy wife. This dynamic becomes especially evident when, at an industry event, Laura finds herself abandoned, waiting for Alan as he socializes with other women.
After a night of drinking at a local bar, Laura reluctantly accepts a ride home from a man who shows interest in her. Once they reach her place, he invites himself in and makes unwanted advances. Laura responds firmly, slapping him to fend him off, which incites a rough reaction from him. Although he momentarily excuses his behavior before leaving, Michael, Alan’s adult son from a previous marriage who is visiting from Los Angeles, witnesses the entire incident from behind a door.
The next day, Laura and Michael are scheduled to meet Alan for lunch, but he is notably late. As they wait, the two, having never met before, strike up a conversation. Michael reveals that he witnessed Laura returning home with another man, insinuating infidelity on her part. This accusation stings, but later, he apologizes, explaining that his outburst stems from frustrations in his own troubled marriage with his pregnant wife. Laura encourages Michael to share his pregnancy news with Alan, despite their estranged relationship.
As the days progress, Laura and Michael’s initial awkwardness fades, allowing them to bond. Laura, working on a song titled “Forty Shades of Blue,” discovers that Michael is a teacher and a writer. Michael grows increasingly frustrated with how Alan treats Laura, yet she reassures him that her life is gratifying compared to her humble beginnings in Russia. Eventually, their friendship escalates, and they share a passionate kiss. One night, they accompany Alan to a club where tensions boil over as Michael attempts to act on his feelings for Laura, leading to heavy drinking and an altercation with the man who had previously harassed her. This prompts Laura to demand they leave.
As their attraction can’t be denied, Laura and Michael share a one-night stand at a hotel, further complicating their entangled lives. The situation escalates when Michael’s wife arrives in Memphis to celebrate a significant event in Alan’s honor. During a grand outdoor party, Alan publicly praises Laura in a heartfelt toast, revealing the challenges of being with him and proposing marriage. This declaration creates an atmosphere of tension as Michael, feeling overshadowed, awkwardly acknowledges his father’s shortcomings.
The following day, just before Michael and his wife prepare to leave for Los Angeles, Laura challenges him to confront their unresolved feelings. Both Alan and Michael’s wife sense the underlying tension from their affair. Michael expresses resentment towards her questioning him, insisting they need to move on, which leads to a bittersweet departure in a taxi.
In a poignant moment later, Alan and Laura drive at night. Alan attempts to patch things up with Laura but veers into talk of business, prompting her to emotionally withdraw and cry. Sensing her turmoil, Alan offers to stop the car, but she declines, stepping out to walk alone down an isolated street. Ignoring his honking horn, she confronts her inner turmoil about whether to stay with Alan or forge her own path as she walks away, leaving the audience with a bittersweet uncertainty about her future.
