When it emerges that the Flodder family’s state-owned house sits on a toxic waste dump, the city council is forced to find somewhere to move them. The social worker Sjakie proposes relocating the family to an upscale neighborhood, hoping that a change in social surroundings will steer them toward a more acceptable lifestyle. However, the family—led by the stubborn Johnnie—continues their loud, anti-social ways, clashing with the reserved neighbors.
Tensions mount as the upper-class residents push back, and the town council begins considering alternative housing options. In the meantime, a personal subplot unfolds: Yolanda Kruisman becomes involved when [Johnnie] starts a relationship with her, much to the fury of her husband. A neighborhood meeting is convened to discuss how to get rid of the Flodders, and during the gathering, the couple announces their engagement and the plan to throw a big party inviting everyone.
Around this time, Ma Flodder learns she has inherited a large sum from Opa Flodder, who recently died in a train accident. With the windfall, she decides to buy the very house they are living in, keeping the family together despite the turmoil.
The film builds to the chaotic, but festive, engagement party. The neighborhood crowd ends up having a great time and, for a moment, begins to see the Flodders for who they are. In the finale, Yolanda’s husband—returning to the army base—steals away, taking one of the army tanks, and destroys the Flodder house. The family confronts it with good humor, ending the story on a surprisingly warm note.
