The story unfolds in contemporary Moscow, within a nocturnal bar setting that thrives on alcohol-fueled brutality. The events span multiple days and nights, highlighting a cycle of abuse, murder, and coercion. The city outside the bar remains indifferent, while inside the room-by-room power dynamics grow increasingly dire.

The events take place in an ordinary Moscow bar. The Owner, a drug addict and alcoholic, runs the place with a harsh, exploitative grip, while two cleaners inhabit the back room. The bar is a cramped, dimly lit space where violence, coercion, and crime spill into everyday life. The environment functions as a microcosm of a corrupt urban underworld.

🔒 Power abuse

A central theme is the abuse of power by the bar owner over his workers. Sanych uses intimidation, coercion, and domination to keep the cleaners in line and to control the volatile environment of the bar. The routine cruelty reveals how ordinary settings can breed extraordinary levels of oppression. The film explores how power is exercised through fear and manipulation.

🩸 Violence

The narrative is threaded with graphic acts of violence, from drowning a victim in a closet to strangulation by a microphone cord. Violence is not a backdrop but an ongoing mechanism that structures each character’s choices. It permeates the atmosphere, turning everyday actions into lethal consequences. Characters are isolated within the harsh social ecosystem of the bar. Mychalkin is mute and vulnerable, seemingly friendless, while the other cleaner’s brutality masks a fragile sense of companionship.
