Ottone begins telling a story to a chance-met psychoanalyst on a sun-soaked beach at an exotic location where they are both staying. He works in a pet shop alongside Lorenza, a woman beloved by Germano, his long-time and eccentric friend who has been quietly sending her gifts as the anonymous donor. The tale unfolds as a tapestry of relationships, miscommunications, and small moments that shape Ottone’s sense of happiness.

After discovering his partner Mara’s betrayal with a local butcher, Ottone moves into a shared apartment with two other tenants: his old friend Barbara and her boyfriend Roberto, nicknamed Er Patata (Potato), who is under house arrest for assaulting a traffic officer. When Ottone returns home to find the couple in the throes of passion, he seeks refuge upstairs with his neighbour Demiù, with whom he finds simple joy in playing and dancing to lively Latin American music.

With patience wearing thin as he searches for a new girlfriend, Ottone meets the beautiful Luna through a work connection and falls hard and fast. But Luna is wealthy and spoiled, carrying a secret that complicates their bond: she is married to a military cadet who remains away for much of the time. Luna suggests they continue their relationship as lovers, and Ottone agrees, while Germano uses a blind date to try to introduce Lorenza to him, though Lorenza mistakes Germano for the restaurant’s maître and leaves him disappointed.

The next morning, a conversation Ottone overhears leads Lorenza to misinterpret his words, believing he is the anonymous admirer who had failed to show up for the previous day’s date. At a party celebrating Patata’s release from house arrest, Patata proposes to Barbara, who is shocked and ruptures into a sudden retreat. Barbara later confides in Ottone about her long-standing affair with the same butcher Mara had betrayed Ottone with. The following day, Roberto returns to Rome, while Germano begins a relationship with Virginia, Roberto’s sister, whom he later marries a few months afterward.

Ottone receives a letter from Luna ending their relationship due to their incompatibilities. The next morning, Lorenza seduces Ottone, but soon he encounters Luna again, who regrets leaving him and suggests they go to the Caribbean together. Lorenza and Barbara each entertain similar ideas to distract themselves from the end of their own romances. Demiù, too, decides to move on and stops by to say goodbye, having saved enough money to start her project of opening a place on an island.

Left alone, Ottone weighs whom he should stay with—Luna, Lorenza, or Barbara. The psychoanalyst, increasingly curious about the outcome, spends the day pondering Ottone’s ultimate choice. That evening, he discovers that Ottone has started a bar on the island with Demiù, and that the two of them have become romantically involved. It becomes clear that a string of brief moments spent dancing and simply being playful with Demiù brought Ottone genuine happiness, more than any grand romance had before.
