Set in a remote Albanian village in the 1930s, the story follows newborn Abas’s child, Gjoleka, caught between his father’s harsh, patriarchal customs and the enlightened outlook of Servet, a villager who returns from America with new ideas. Gjoleka symbolizes the yearning of a young generation in a poor, ritual‑bound society, confronting love, jealousy, hate and the pull of a distant world in a stark, realistic portrait of cultural conflict.
