Op Rachel Bloom and Ed Adam DeVine are siblings in a small, endearing group of Flummells — fluffy rabbit-like creatures with holes in their centers that call the Galápagos home. In this world, Op’s misfortune is a running rumor, and Ed tries to shield her even as the others keep a wary distance. Their bond, woven with warmth and frustration, shapes the heart of the story as they navigate a community that doesn’t quite understand them.

One day, just as Charles Darwin Tom Hollander arrives on his voyage of discovery, Op Rachel Bloom and Ed stumble upon a peculiar, luminescent flower. This isn’t just any plant — it acts like a portal, a doorway that swallows the two siblings and whisks them away to a bustling, modern-day Shanghai. There, they cross paths with Clarance Ken Jeong , a white poodle with a big personality and a sharper wit than either of them anticipated. The initial wonder of seeing a city that feels worlds apart from their island life quickly gives way to a new truth: their species, the Flummells, is now believed extinct, a fact Darwin himself would later uncover when he returns to survey the island and finds it wrecked by a volcanic eruption.

Clarance leads them to a place called the Time Terminal, a pavilion where Clarance’s owner, Dr. Chung Benedict Wong , has spent years studying the flowers and seeds with time-traveling potential. The discovery is thrilling but dangerous: Op accidentally dislodges several seeds, causing the Terminal to malfunction. In the ensuing chaos, Clarance ends up in 1915 Antarctica, along with the seed that is supposed to guide the Flummells home. In that frozen landscape, Clarance is captured by Ernest Shackleton Reggie Watts and his expedition team, dragging the trio into a race against time and extinction.

To complicate matters, the Extinctables — a team of extinct animals assembled by Dr. Chung to support the mission — join the adventure. Dottie [ Zazie Beetz ], Burnie [ Jim Jefferies ], Alma [ Catherine O’Hara ], and Hoss Reggie Watts come to life as companions who bring their own quirks and strengths to the quest. They lend Op and Ed a sense of camaraderie and purpose as they travel through each seed, trying to locate the one that can restore their home and rescue Clarance.

As the journey unfolds, Op and Ed experience the friction that often accompanies a close family relationship. A falling out between the siblings drives Op to return to their own time to warn their fellow Flummels about the looming eruption. However, Clarance proves to be a ruthless obstacle, imprisoning Op and insisting that the Flummels ruined his life. He presents himself as the architect of their extinction, having been adopted by Dr. Chung and then manipulated into a dangerous betrayal that pushes the volcano into action and threatens everything they hold dear. Dr. Chung, charmed by the Flummels’ cuteness, is drawn into a dangerous conflict with the creature he once studied and trusted.

The story intensifies as Clarance hatches a plan that would erase the Flummels from history once and for all. He deploys a drone bomb and uses technology to erase their time-aligned existence. Ed and the Extinctables rally, driven by a sense of responsibility to their friends and to their own survival. The team works feverishly to counter the threat by guiding a seed that could move the island itself into the present day, giving them a second chance to set things right. In a tense confrontation, Clarance survives the peril, but Dr. Chung arrives and, echoing the gratitude of a scientist who has learned to value the creatures he once studied, sends Clarance back to 1915 Antarctica and acknowledges the efforts of the Flummels and the Extinctables.

A year passes, and Op and Ed finally win acceptance from their community, who come to see the siblings not as oddities but as a vital part of their world. The tale closes with a surprising twist: Dottie lays a blueish egg shaped like a Flummel for Ed, a sign of new beginnings and the possibility of life beyond the island’s old myths. The egg’s unknown contents leave a hint of mystery hovering in the air, signaling that the story, while resolved in one sense, still holds questions about what comes next.

In a light, mid-credits moment, Op surprises Ed by pulling Wally Richard Kind into the Time Terminal. Wally exclaims that they have so much to talk about, while Op steps away with a playful promise to fetch him a glass of water — a small, hopeful note that leaves the door open for future adventures.
