In the near future, the Department of Emotional Integrity (D.E.I.) issues relationship scores that determine how people are treated and what opportunities they can access in society.
Ben [Aaron Yoo] is denied a job at Origin, a design company, because of a low relationship score, while Sara [Brittany Ishibashi] secures a business loan for a new cafe thanks to her high score. Ben’s friend Henry [Chris Riedell] nudges him to visit the D.E.I. with Sara so they can boost his numbers together. At the D.E.I., Ben and Sara clash over their conflicting memories of their past relationship, but they eventually reconcile and agree to shoulder 50-50 responsibility. This mutual concession pushes Ben’s score up enough to land him a designer role at Origin.
Seth [Brandon Soo-Hoo] and Haley [Victoria Park] are headed to different colleges in California—San Francisco for Haley and Los Angeles for Seth—and they register their long-distance relationship with Randall [Randall Park], a recurring D.E.I. agent who tracks such agreements. Ben’s life at his new job soon introduces him to Anna [Joanna Sotomura], a coworker with whom he begins a relationship.
When Ben visits Sara’s cafe during its soft opening, he offers to paint a mural to fill an empty wall. Late at night, after a few drinks, Ben and Sara share a kiss; Sara seems receptive at first but quickly realizes the mistake and runs out. Anna discovers the kiss and warns that it could jeopardize her own relationship with Ben.
Meanwhile, Seth makes frequent trips to Haley’s college, but their relationship begins to fracture as Haley abandons Seth for time with friends. He also contemplates transferring to Haley’s city to be closer, which upsets her because she values independence. The tension deepens when Seth learns Haley has been keeping plans to study abroad in London from him.
Two D.E.I. agents visit Sara’s cafe to probe a fraudulent relationship she used to boost her score after the breakup with Ben. The investigation unsettles Sara, and she loses the cafe as her score plunges. Ben also loses his job at Origin after a breakup with Anna damages his standing.
As Seth heads to the airport to visit Haley, she breaks up with him over the phone, citing his pushiness and lack of regard for her choices. Seth ends the relationship, taking full responsibility for the split.
Ben is audited, and Randall breaks policy by sharing a recording of Ben’s testimony that helps shield Sara from further damage. Sara listens to his honest account of love and his critique of the D.E.I., arguing that love and relationships aren’t meant to be simplified rituals. When Sara revisits what was her cafe, she finds Ben finishing the mural, and they resume painting a pair of sails together. Seth and Haley begin life separately—Haley moving to London and Seth to San Francisco.
In a mid-credits scene, Henry and his wife Sandy take out a loan for a bakery, presumably on Sara’s behalf.
