El bolero de Raquel

Cantinflas becomes Chavita's guardian after his compadre (the child's father) dies in an accident. The widow Leonor cannot support the child financially, so she leaves Chavita with Cantinflas while she travels to Guadalajara to seek help from her parents. Cantinflas reluctantly accepts this responsibility despite having no training or stable income.

While working in Chapultepec Park, Chavita gets excited watching other children play with a ball, and a nanny quarrels with the kids over it. Cantinflas promises to bring Chavita a new ball to comfort him. This promise becomes a running theme throughout the film, symbolizing Cantinflas's commitment to providing for the boy.

Cantinflas enrolls in a local school to improve his prospects and increase his chances of finding steadier employment. His goal is to build a more stable life for himself and the boy he's caring for.

At the nightclub, Cantinflas attempts to work as a shoeshiner but accidentally wanders into the dancers' dressing room. He disrupts a Boléro performance by misnaming the piece, causing chaos. This wordplay references the film's Spanish title 'El bolero de Raquel' and the Mexican term for shoeshiners. He gets kicked out, marking a comedic setback.

In Acapulco, Chavita attempts to climb the dangerous La Quebrada cliff. Cantinflas chases after him but gets stuck at the top while Chavita slips to safety on the other side. To save himself and rescue the boy if needed, Cantinflas must perform a spectacular, high-risk dive into the sea below, showcasing his improvisational bravery.

After his heroic dive, Cantinflas is offered a lifeguard position. However, his lack of discipline and carelessness leads to a near-disaster during a rescue attempt of a large woman. He almost drowns himself trying to save her, and is fired the same day for his reckless behavior.

When Leonor returns with her fiancé and asks for Chavita back, she also asks Cantinflas to be a witness at their wedding. He declines quietly, symbolizing his emotional distance and the painful separation from the boy he's grown to love. He chooses to protect his bond with Chavita rather than participate in their new life.

After Chavita leaves with Leonor, Cantinflas meets Raquel in a park. She expresses her love for him, acknowledging the void left by Chavita. In a joyful moment, Cantinflas kicks a ball in celebration, accidentally hitting a policeman, but the officer smiles approvingly. They share a kiss, and Cantinflas offers to shine the policeman's shoes, sealing their future together.
