A boy becomes captivated by an alluring older woman who resides in an adjacent apartment, and he spends nights observing her through a telescope as she goes about her daily routine. As he observes, he notices her struggles and emotional pain, especially after a breakup with her latest boyfriend. One evening, he witnesses her return home after this breakup, spilling milk and breaking down in tears over yet another failed relationship. Curious and concerned, he asks his grandmother [saroj-bhargava] about why people cry. This curiosity leads to frustration in his own life, especially after losing his job and going through heartbreak, which culminates in a confrontation with the woman, where he confesses that he has been watching her solely because he cares. She, in turn, reveals that someone across the way has been watching her and that she’s aware of the boy’s secret fascination.

On another night, she arranges her bed deliberately, allowing the boy to see her with another man, suggesting the complex emotions and the boundaries they’ve crossed. Later, her boyfriend confronts the boy, calling him out and physically assaulting him for spying on her. Days later, she finally sees that he has returned when she looks through the telescope at his window. She visits his apartment, where his grandmother keeps her from getting too close to his bandaged wrists. Through the telescope, she looks into her own apartment and imagines what he might have seen that night—her spilling milk and crying, her heartbreak—and visualizes an alternate reality where he is there comforting her.
