What Happens in Dukun: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Dukun (2018) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Karim, played by Faizal Hussein, is a dedicated public defender working in the bustling city of Kuala Lumpur. His personal life, however, is fractured; he is a single father struggling with a haunted past. Years ago, his wife vanished without a trace, and more recently, his teenage daughter, Nadia, has also run away from home. In a desperate attempt to reunite his family, Karim hires Daud, a former police officer, to track the girl down. Despite their efforts, they repeatedly miss her by a narrow margin, leading the experienced Daud to suspect that something supernatural is actively blocking their path and hiding Nadia from their sight.

Driven by desperation, Karim reaches out to an old government contact to ensure he is notified if the authorities find his daughter. In exchange for this favor, Karim agrees to provide a legal defense for Diana Dahlan, a shaman who has been arrested under grim circumstances. Diana is accused of the murder of Dato' Jeffri, a high-profile and wealthy businessman, who was allegedly killed during a pagan ritual. During their initial meeting, Diana shocks Karim by demonstrating an uncanny knowledge of his private life. She reveals that he and his wife struggled with infertility before eventually conceiving Nadia, and she speaks of the subsequent disappearance of his wife and the flight of his daughter. This revelation leads Karim to believe that Diana truly possesses supernatural abilities.

Parallel to this, the investigation into Diana's crimes is led by officers Talib and Shah. As they dig deeper, they discover a disturbing pattern of disappearances involving powerful and affluent men. Seeking a connection, Talib consults with Daud, who had investigated several of these earlier cold cases. During their conversation, Daud offers a cryptic warning about the nature of greed and faith, suggesting that people no longer worship solely in the direction of Mecca, but instead worship in all directions in pursuit of fame and wealth. He warns Talib that the further he delves into this darkness, the more susceptible he may become to temptation.

The mystery takes a violent turn when Danni, Diana's assistant, murders Daud. This act of violence provides Talib with a breakthrough, as he realizes that Daud's previous warnings were actually clues. Talib and Shah discover that Diana had lived in four different regions of the city—north, south, east, and west. Upon excavating her former residences, they find a gruesome discovery: dead bodies buried at every single location. While most of the victims were men who had previously been Diana's clients, one victim is a woman. This female body has been mummified, but with one horrifying detail: her womb has been completely removed.

As the legal battle continues, Nadia is finally located by the authorities and detained in a women's jail. However, she quickly descends into a state of hysteria, appearing to be possessed. While confined to the hospital wing, she is visited by the spirit of Diana. Through a series of harrowing flashbacks, the truth is revealed: before Nadia was conceived, Karim's wife had secretly sought Diana's mystical help to get pregnant. The price for this miracle was a dark pact; the wife was required to sacrifice her second fetus. When she became pregnant again years later, she refused to go through with the ritual. In a brutal act of supernatural enforcement, Diana and Danni forcefully removed her womb, leading to her death.

During the trial, it is argued that Diana did not intentionally kill Dato' Jeffri. According to her, Jeffri was supposed to follow specific taboos to achieve a state of invincibility. To test if the ritual had worked, Diana attempted to strike him with her sword, but the ritual failed, and she killed him instantly. To hide the evidence, she and her assistant sliced the body into eighteen separate pieces. Despite Karim's attempts to reduce the charge to manslaughter, the court finds her guilty of murder and sentences her to death by hanging. In a final act of defiance or perhaps destiny, Diana waives her right to appeal and demands to be executed immediately.

Following the verdict, Karim rushes to the prison to retrieve Nadia, only to be told that she has already been released. It is then that Talib delivers the final, crushing blow: the mummified woman found at Diana's former home was Karim's missing wife. The story concludes with the execution of Diana, but death is not the end. As the Hangman carries out the sentence, Diana's spirit migrates, possessing the body of Nadia. The young girl is no longer just a daughter; she has become the successor, the new woman shaman.

The mummified female body with only her womb removed is Karim's missing wife. After she refused to undergo the ritual to sacrifice her second fetus, Diana and Danni killed her and extracted her womb as part of the dark ceremony. Her body was preserved while the womb was kept for the ritual, which is why it appears uniquely treated compared to the male victims found at Diana's other homes.

Excavation of Diana's former homes in four different directions of Kuala Lumpur reveals their dead bodies, showing that Diana and her assistant Danni killed them rather than simply performing rituals.

After Daud is murdered, Talib realizes Diana used to live in the northern, southern, eastern, and western regions of Kuala Lumpur, and the bodies of her victims are buried at each of those homes.

More Movies Like Dukun, by Mood & Story

Curated lists built around what makes Dukun tick: the same mood, the same kind of story or the same emotional payoff. Each list explains why these movies belong together.

Dark true crime meets supernatural horror like in Dukun

Real crimes twisted by otherworldly dread and courtroom reckoning. Movies like Dukun that blend real-life crime investigations with supernatural dread. If you liked Dukun's mix of courtroom drama, ritualistic murder, and disturbing paranormal revelations, these disturbing crime thrillers deliver a similarly grim, unsettling ride.

  • courtroom dread
  • true crime horror
  • ritualistic murder
  • bleak justice
  • supernatural investigation
  • graphic violence
  • Tone: dark, bleak, oppressive
  • Pacing: variable, methodical with violent peaks
Why these movies?

The story pattern: These stories usually unfold through parallel tracks: a methodical police or investigative procedure on one side, and creeping supernatural revelations on the other. Courtroom confrontations slowly expose the rot beneath official proceedings, while flashbacks and parallel timelines reveal the human cost. Protagonists often lose everything before the truth finally surfaces, and endings tend to be bleak rather than redemptive.

Why they belong together: They share Dukun's core DNA: based-on-a-true-story framing, layered procedural pacing that swings between slow revelations and shocking horror beats, graphic violence including dismemberment or ritual killing, and a finale that punishes rather than consoles. The mix of courtroom substance with paranormal dread is the through line.

Shamanic folk horror and ritual dread like in Dukun

Ancient rituals, possession, and dark forces seeping into ordinary lives. Movies like Dukun that explore shamanism, dark rituals, possession, and occult horror drawn from local folklore. If you liked Dukun's eerie depictions of ritual killing and supernatural possession wrapped in cultural mysticism, these disturbing folk horror thrillers will hit the same nerve.

  • Pacing: slow burn with sudden violent shocks
Why these movies?

The story pattern: Stories typically begin with a mysterious disappearance, illness, or crime that draws investigators or family members into a web of rituals, sacrifices, and forbidden practices. Possession and forced spiritual manipulation become central threats, often targeting vulnerable victims like children. The supernatural forces are not abstract monsters but rooted in human belief, greed, and exploitation, ending with devastating personal loss.

Why they belong together: They channel Dukun's specific brand of cultural horror: shamanic practitioners accused of heinous acts, ritual dismemberment or organ removal, possession of young victims, and a brooding sense that ancient spiritual systems harbor real violence. The pacing shifts between slow supernatural dread and explosive horror set pieces.
