The whole story of Dragon Ball Z Kai (2024) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Dragon Ball Z takes place five years after the events of the Dragon Ball series and follows the adventures of a now young adult Son Goku, who is also a father to his son Gohan. Their peaceful life is disrupted when a humanoid alien named Raditz arrives on Earth in a spacecraft. To Goku's shock, Raditz reveals himself to be Goku’s long-lost older brother and a member of the endangered elite warrior race known as the Saiyans (サイヤ人, Saiya-jin).

Goku, whose original name is Kakarot (カカロット, Kakarotto), was sent to Earth to escape the destruction of their home planet, Vegeta. Raditz explains that he, along with two more formidable Saiyans, Vegeta and Nappa, are the last survivors of their race following the annihilation of Planet Vegeta. Attempting to recruit Goku into aiding them in conquering worlds, Raditz's offer is met with refusal. In retaliation, he swiftly takes both Goku and Krillin down with a single blow, abducts Gohan, and threatens Goku with his son's life unless he kills 100 humans in the next 24 hours.

With time against him, Goku forms an unexpected alliance with his rival, Piccolo, who is also a target of Raditz's earlier onslaught, to rescue Gohan and confront Raditz. During the intense battle, Gohan's latent rage surges, granting him a momentary increase in strength that surprises both Goku and Piccolo as he fiercely protects his father. The confrontation reaches its climax when Goku manages to hold Raditz in place, allowing Piccolo to unleash a devastating attack known as the Special Beam Cannon (魔貫光殺砲, Makankōsappō; lit. 'Demon Penetrating, Killing Ray Gun'), mortally injuring them both. In his dying breaths, Raditz warns Piccolo that the two other Saiyans are more powerful and will come for the Dragon Balls in one year.

Recognizing Gohan’s potential, Piccolo takes on the task of training him in isolation to prepare for the looming threat of the Saiyans. Meanwhile, Goku embarks on a perilous journey through the Afterlife along the million-kilometer Snake Way to train under King Kai, who imparts crucial techniques, such as the Kaio-ken (界王拳, Kaiōken; lit. 'Fist of Kings of Worlds') and the Spirit Bomb (元気玉, Genki Dama; lit. 'Energy Sphere').

Despite their antagonistic beginnings, Piccolo develops a bond with Gohan as he mentors him in survival and combat skills. As a year passes, Goku is revived using the Dragon Balls, but he learns that he will be delayed until after the Saiyans arrive due to having to traverse Snake Way again. His friends, realizing the urgency, attempt to fend off the Saiyans but fall to Nappa and Vegeta, the latter known as the "Prince of All Saiyans." Tragically, the battle leads to the deaths of several allies, including Yamcha, Tien Shinhan, Chiaotzu, and Piccolo, who is greeted with the grim fate of erasing both himself and the Dragon Balls from existence.

Goku finally reaches the battlefield, fueled by vengeance and urgency. He quickly defeats Nappa with ease, causing Vegeta to execute Nappa for his failures. Goku immerses himself in a fierce struggle against Vegeta, employing various levels of the Kaio-ken technique, although it takes a toll on his body. Vegeta, using an artificial moon, transforms into a colossal Great Ape, overwhelming Goku. However, Krillin and Gohan, sensing danger, return to aid Goku and, with crucial support from Yajirobe, manage to cut off Vegeta’s tail, returning him to his normal state. Goku gives Krillin a Spirit Bomb, which results in significant damage to Vegeta, ultimately leading to his defeat when Gohan transforms into a Great Ape and crushes Vegeta, forcing him to escape, vowing vengeance against Goku.

During the chaos, Krillin overhears Vegeta mention the original Dragon Balls from their alien homeworld, Namek (ナメック星, Namekku-sei). While Goku recuperates from his injuries, Gohan, Krillin, and Bulma set off for Namek to revive their lost friends through the Dragon Balls. Upon arrival, they discover that Vegeta and the powerful Frieza are already hunting the Dragon Balls for immortality, prompting a high-stakes game of strategy and conflict.

Vegeta’s newfound strength, cultivated after coming back from near-death experiences, sees him increasingly rebelling against Frieza. The situation intensifies as they all vie for the Dragon Balls, pitting Frieza and his mercenaries, the Ginyu Force, against Goku, who eventually arrives just in time to save Vegeta, Gohan, and Krillin from certain doom. A legendary clash ensues, leading Goku to heal and uplift his allies just before facing off against the tyrant himself.

Goku learns about Frieza’s history of destruction against the Saiyans and soon enters a climactic battle. Although Goku’s resolve is unwavering, he finds himself outmatched, leading him to request assistance from the Spirit Bomb. In a moment of rage and desperation, after witnessing Krillin's death and Frieza’s relentless cruelty, Goku transforms into a Super Saiyan, marking an iconic moment in the saga. With his newfound power, Goku engages Frieza, ultimately surmounting the overwhelming odds and escaping as Namek meets its fiery demise.

Following a tumultuous period resulting from these confrontations, Goku's friends anxiously await his return when a formidable foe, Garlic Jr., escapes his imprisonment seeking vengeance against Gohan. The heroes engage in combat against Garlic Jr.'s ever-growing power, ultimately finding victory when Gohan reaches the brink of his latent potential, sending Garlic Jr. back to the depths he came from.

One year later, Frieza makes a shocking reappearance on Earth, but is swiftly dealt with by the mysterious Trunks, a young warrior claiming to be the son of Vegeta and Bulma. He warns Goku about Androids created by Dr. Gero that threaten his friends' lives. As the android saga unfolds, friendships are tested, new alliances are forged, and Goku learns to harness the power of the Super Saiyan form once again.

As time progresses, the saga introduces new challenges that include the vengeful androids, the sinister Cell, and the existential threat posed by Majin Buu. Through decisive battles, sacrifices, and transformative moments of growth, Goku and his friends strive to protect Earth from annihilation, witnessing the birth of alliances and the deepening of existing ones. The epic narrative culminates with Goku's journey featuring the restoration of peace, the resurrection of his friends, and ultimately setting the stage for future generations to carry on the legacy of protection and bravery.

Dragon Ball Z Kai Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Dragon Ball Z Kai (2024): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why did Raditz demand Goku kill 100 humans?

Raditz kidnapped Gohan to force Goku to prove he was still the ruthless Saiyan warrior Kakarot. The demand for 100 human kills was a loyalty test meant to demonstrate that Goku had not been softened by his life on Earth. Since Goku had rejected Saiyan conquest and embraced Earth's peaceful values, Raditz used his son as leverage to either break that morality or eliminate the child entirely.

Foreshadowing: Raditz's reveal that Goku's birth name is Kakarot foreshadows that his son Gohan also carries dormant Saiyan instincts.

Q2

Why did Goku team up with Piccolo to fight Raditz?

Goku and Piccolo were longtime enemies, but Raditz's overwhelming strength made it clear neither could win alone. Piccolo held a personal grudge against Raditz for the earlier attack, and Goku needed Piccolo's Special Beam Cannon to deliver a killing blow. This forced alliance in Dragon Ball Z Kai marks the turning point that slowly transforms Piccolo from villain to reluctant ally.

Foreshadowing: Piccolo's decision to fire the attack alongside Goku shows the first crack in his cold exterior, which Piccolo will later build on by training Gohan.

Q3

How did Gohan suddenly become powerful enough to fight Raditz?

Gohan possessed dormant Saiyan fighting potential that had been suppressed by his gentle upbringing on Earth. When he saw his father being injured, his rage unlocked a hidden power surge that briefly allowed him to match Raditz in combat. This outburst in Dragon Ball Z Kai was the first visible sign that Gohan inherited Saiyan strength far beyond what his peaceful childhood suggested.

Foreshadowing: Raditz mentions early in the saga that Gohan has unusually high potential even by Saiyan standards, hinting at his future power.

Q4

Why did Piccolo decide to train Gohan after Raditz's death?

Piccolo trained Gohan because Raditz's dying warning revealed that two far stronger Saiyans would arrive within a year. Having witnessed Gohan's hidden potential during the battle, Piccolo saw him as Earth's best hope for survival. Training his former enemy's son also gave Piccolo a path toward redemption, turning him from a villain into a mentor across Dragon Ball Z Kai.

Foreshadowing: Piccolo's brief protective instinct during the Raditz battle hints that his character arc is shifting long before he officially agrees to train Gohan.

Q5

How did Goku train after dying against Raditz?

After being killed by the Special Beam Cannon, Goku's spirit traveled across Snake Way, a million-kilometer serpentine path in the afterlife, to reach King Kai's planet. There he learned advanced techniques including the Kaio-ken multiplier and the Spirit Bomb. This afterlife training was essential because Goku knew he would eventually be revived and needed the power to face the incoming Saiyans.

Foreshadowing: King Kai warns Goku that the techniques will only push his body to its absolute limits, foreshadowing the physical toll he later pays against Vegeta.

Q6

Why was Goku late to fight Nappa and Vegeta?

Even after being revived with the Dragon Balls, Goku still had to traverse Snake Way again to return to Earth. The path could not be skipped, which left his friends to face the Saiyans without him. By the time Goku finally arrived, Nappa and Vegeta had already killed Yamcha, Tien, Chiaotzu, and Piccolo, escalating the stakes of the entire battle.

Foreshadowing: King Kai mentions early on that Snake Way is longer than Goku realizes, foreshadowing his delayed return.

Q7

Why did Vegeta execute Nappa?

Vegeta viewed Nappa's defeat by Goku as an unforgivable sign of weakness. As the self-proclaimed Prince of all Saiyans, Vegeta believed failure disqualified a warrior from survival. Killing Nappa removed what Vegeta saw as dead weight and reinforced his belief that only the strong deserved to live, a Saiyan code that Vegeta clings to throughout Dragon Ball Z Kai.

Foreshadowing: Vegeta's casual cruelty toward his longtime partner foreshadows how far he is willing to go when pride is threatened.

Q8

How did Goku's team defeat Vegeta's Great Ape form?

Vegeta used an artificial moon to transform into a colossal Great Ape that overwhelmed Goku in raw power. Krillin, Gohan, and Yajirobe worked together to slice off Vegeta's tail, instantly reverting him to his base form and draining most of his strength. With Vegeta weakened, Goku channeled a Spirit Bomb through Krillin, and Gohan finished the fight by crushing Vegeta as a Great Ape himself.

Foreshadowing: Yajirobe lurking near the battlefield pays off here, as he is the one who finally lands the cut on Vegeta's tail.

Q9

Why did the heroes travel to Namek after the Saiyan battle?

Piccolo's death had erased Earth's Dragon Balls from existence, leaving no way to revive fallen allies like Krillin, Yamcha, Tien, and Chiaotzu. Krillin overheard Vegeta mention that the planet Namek had its own set of Dragon Balls. Gohan, Krillin, and Bulma traveled there in Dragon Ball Z Kai hoping to use those orbs to bring their friends back to life.

Foreshadowing: The Namekian Dragon Balls are mentioned just before the Saiyans arrive, planting the seed for the next major arc.

Q10

What triggered Goku's Super Saiyan transformation?

Goku's transformation was triggered by Frieza murdering Krillin in front of him after an already exhausting battle. The combination of grief, helplessness, and uncontainable rage unlocked the legendary Super Saiyan power, which had not been activated in a thousand years. This moment in Dragon Ball Z Kai marks the emotional peak of the Frieza saga and permanently raises the series' power ceiling.

Foreshadowing: The Namekian elders warn that Saiyan rage can unlock power that even they fear, foreshadowing Goku's awakening.

Q11

Why did Piccolo's death erase the Dragon Balls?

Piccolo was the original creator of Earth's Dragon Balls, and his life force sustained their magic. When he died, the connection that powered the orbs was severed, causing them to turn to stone and stop functioning. This is why Dragon Ball Z Kai's heroes had no way to revive their fallen friends on Earth and were forced to seek Namek's Dragon Balls instead.

Foreshadowing: Kami and Piccolo are introduced as a shared being, hinting that their fates and the Dragon Balls are deeply linked.

Q12

Who is Trunks and why did he kill Frieza?

Trunks is the son of Vegeta and Bulma, born after the Namek saga. He traveled back in time to warn the heroes about the Androids created by Dr. Gero, arriving just as Frieza and his father King Cold came to Earth for revenge. Trunks effortlessly killed Frieza in Dragon Ball Z Kai to prove he was strong enough to protect Earth and to eliminate the tyrant once and for all.

Foreshadowing: Bulma's relationship with Vegeta, hinted at during the Namek arc, becomes central to Trunks' identity.

Q13

Why were Goku and Raditz sent to Earth as babies?

Goku (Kakarot) and Raditz were low-class Saiyan infants assigned to conquer primitive planets while the Saiyan empire focused on stronger targets. Their mission was to clear worlds of weak inhabitants and sell the planets, with Goku specifically meant to subjugate Earth. A severe head injury during landing wiped Goku's aggressive programming, which is why he grew up peaceful instead of conquering the planet.

Foreshadowing: Raditz reveals Goku's true name as Kakarot, hinting that the entire series will eventually trace Goku back to his alien origins.
