Dindigul Sarathy

Sarathy is introduced as an insecure teetotaler living with his mother and younger sister in Dindigul. He runs a small press company and suffers from an inferiority complex because of his dark skin. The setup establishes his fragile self-esteem and the social pressures he faces.

On his marriage proposal day, Vasanthi—who is fairer—agrees to marry Sarathy. The wedding acts as a social challenge to the stigma about skin color. The union plants the seeds for the later mistrust that consumes him.

Shortly after the wedding, Sarathy's insecurity spikes as he begins suspecting Vasanthi without any real cause. He even beats his own brother, who has come from Mumbai, convinced that appearance could influence her love. The episode drives a deeper rift at home.

His mother Saradha becomes estranged, widening the family rift and weakening the bond between Sarathy and Vasanthi. The mounting tension makes the home less of a sanctuary and more of a pressure cooker.

To spy on his wife, he lies about going to town but instead visits a nearby lodge to monitor her activities. His paranoia grows as he misreads ordinary interactions as signs of infidelity.

While spying, he sees a man entering their house and hits him with a wooden log, mistaking him for an intruder. The man, however, turns out to be Vasanthi's father, which deepens his guilt and confusion.

His mind fixates on the possibility of Vasanthi having an affair with actor Ajithkumar. When the police later prove this suspicion false, his insecurity remains unshaken.

To confront what he believes is a relationship, he disguises himself as a reporter at Vasanthi's college. He creates a ruckus by accusing the army officer—Vasanthi's senior—and his wife of wrong relationships, and he even steals the officer's revolver.

Vasanthi learns of her husband's suspicions and he goes to his parents' home to reflect on his behavior. The couple's bond continues to fray as miscommunication grows.

Wandering the streets in a disturbed state, Sarathy is bitten by dogs and is admitted to a hospital. There, he begins to receive counseling and starts facing the reality of his insecurity.

A psychiatrist helps him realize that appearance is irrelevant and that true value lies in talent and character. This insight marks a turning point in his thinking.

He travels to Vasanthi's village to apologize for his earlier mistakes and attempts to mend their relationship. He hopes to regain her trust and repair the damage caused by his suspicions.

Vasanthi's parents refuse to send their daughter with him and drive him away. Their reluctance blocks the couple from moving forward despite his remorse.

On a bus, Vasanthi and Sarathy reconnect; they decide to stay together and eventually return home. They begin a new life together, ending the ordeal on a hopeful note.
