Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning (2023) Timeline Explained – Every Event in Order

Lui Ohwada is a boy who claims to be the first DigiDestined connected to the mysterious Digi-Egg that appeared in 1996. Unlike the Adventure 02 team who received their Digivices later, Lui was the very first child to interact with a Digi-Egg, making him the original 'chosen child' in the digital world's history.

Foreshadowing: Earlier scenes show the Digi-Egg emerging in 2012, hinting at its connection to Lui's past.

Lui wished for kindness from the people around him after struggling with a broken home in 1996. Ukkomon, a Digimon capable of fulfilling wishes, not only granted this wish but also influenced those around Lui to treat him kindly. However, this unintended consequence also caused countless other DigiDestined to appear, leading to battles and struggles that weighed heavily on Lui's conscience.

Foreshadowing: The Digi-Egg's proclamation about connecting every human with a Digimon hints at the consequences of wishes gone too far.

Overwhelmed by guilt over the consequences of his wish, Lui confronted Ukkomon in a moment of distress and anger. His heated outburst caused Ukkomon to dissolve and disappear, leaving Lui to deal with the emotional fallout of losing his first digital companion.

Foreshadowing: The 1996 flashback shows the emotional bond between young Lui and the hatching Digi-Egg, making their later separation more impactful.

The giant Ukkomon that reappears in 2012 presents Lui with a choice: whether to let every person on Earth receive a Digimon companion. This 'gift' represents a massive alteration to human history, forcing the DigiDestined to decide if they should intervene or risk losing their own precious bonds with their Digimon partners.

Foreshadowing: Ukkomon's original ability to fulfill wishes foreshadows this world-altering proposal.

Davis and Veemon argue that their partnership is genuine and should not be manipulated by Ukkomon's power. They believe the bonds between DigiDestined and their Digimon are authentic connections that cannot be artificially created or replicated, making them wary of accepting a world where every person receives a Digimon without earning that relationship.

Foreshadowing: The DigiDestined's previous battles and sacrifices establish the depth of their real partnerships.

After Imperialdramon Fighter Mode defeats the giant Ukkomon and reduces it to a small Digi-Egg, Lui makes the ultimate sacrifice by giving up the eye that Ukkomon had lent him years earlier. This act represents severing the last supernatural connection between himself and the Digimon that had profoundly shaped his life.

Foreshadowing: Ukkomon's ability to grant physical gifts like the eye is established early in their relationship.

The Digivices disappear globally because the bonds between humans and their Digimon have grown so strong that they no longer need artificial devices to sustain their connections. The DigiDestined have evolved beyond relying on technology, proving that their partnerships are genuine and self-sustaining.

Foreshadowing: Davis and Veemon's argument about authentic bonds foreshadows this technological transcendence.

While assisting Lui with his quest, the Adventure 02 DigiDestined and their Digimon accidentally fall through a portal that transports them back to 1996. There, they witness young Lui struggling with his difficult home life and discover the moment he first encounters the Digi-Egg that would change his destiny.

Foreshadowing: The mysterious Digi-Egg's appearance in 2012 hints at its ability to transcend time.

In the film's closing moments, Lui's own Digi-Egg begins to stir with life, suggesting a new chapter is beginning for him. This implies that despite sacrificing his connection to Ukkomon, Lui will embark on a fresh journey with a new Digimon partner, continuing the cycle of DigiDestined and leaving the future shrouded in both uncertainty and hope.

Foreshadowing: The cyclical nature of Digimon adventures is established through the original Digi-Egg's appearance.

Ukkomon is a unique Digimon capable of fulfilling wishes, which made it incredibly powerful and dangerous. This ability allowed it to grant Lui's wish for kindness, create his first Digivice, and later propose the massive choice of giving every human a Digimon companion. Its power represents both the allure and peril of having wishes granted without fully understanding the consequences.

Foreshadowing: The Digi-Egg's proclamation about connecting humans with Digimon directly relates to Ukkomon's wish-fulfilling nature.
