What Happens in Digimon: Digital Monsters: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Digimon: Digital Monsters (2000) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

The film unfolds in three distinct acts, narrated by one of the leading characters, Kari Kamiya, who appears in both the first and third acts. Kari begins by introducing the captivating universe of Digimon, explaining the origin of these creatures, which are formed from computer data and inhabit a parallel dimension known as the Digital World. She elaborates on her role in a select group called the Digidestined, who partner with Digimon to safeguard their world from malevolent forces. Initially, the team consists of just a few members, but soon welcomes a new addition, Willis, who resides in Colorado. Willis is accompanied by his twin Digimon, Gummymon and Kokomon, but he struggles with feelings of isolation and loneliness.

The narrative transitions to 1995, focusing on a fateful night when Kari and her older brother Tai encounter their very first Digimon. In Highton View Terrace, Tokyo, Tai awakens to find Kari intently observing their father's computer as a massive Digiegg appears. The following day, they witness the egg hatch into Botamon, which quickly forms a bond with Kari. While Tai is briefly distracted by a phone call, he returns to find Botamon has evolved into Koromon, a playful, pink Digimon. This transformation, referred to as digivolving, enhances the Digimon's abilities but also disrupts electrical devices nearby.

Kari playfully steals food from their family cat, Miko, inciting its fury, which leads to a comical scuffle among Tai, Koromon, and Miko. At sunset, Koromon surprises them by speaking, declaring them his best friends. Later that night, an electrical surge causes Koromon to digivolve into Agumon, a large, dinosaur-like creature. Kari hops onto Agumon's back as they go on an adventure that leads them to the streets, where Agumon creates chaos by unleashing fireballs.

In a dramatic twist, a second, colossal Digiegg hatches, releasing Parrotmon, a menacing, bird-like Digimon capable of shooting electrical blasts. When Parrotmon buries Agumon under rubble, a desperate Tai encourages Agumon, who digs deep within to digivolve into Greymon and contends with Parrotmon. Although Greymon is struck down, Tai uses Kari's whistle, rousing Greymon to action, who ultimately defeats Parrotmon at the cost of his own existence.

Kari narrates how she, Tai, and six other children were chosen to become the Digidestined based on their witnessing this intense battle. This narration segues into the second act, which is set in 2000, a year after the events from the series Digimon Adventure. Within this backdrop, Koushiro "Izzy" Izumi, a tech-savvy member of the Digidestined, identifies an alarming computer virus invading the internet. Among the worldwide chaos unleashed by this virus, one Digiegg mutates, hatching into a Digimon that greets the world with a cheerful "Hello!".

Meanwhile, Tai grapples with reconciling a dispute with his friend Sora Takenouchi, as he tries to compose an apology letter. Lurking nearby, Kari unwittingly sends the email without Tai's consent. As various montages illustrate the daily lives of the Digidestined, unexpected interactions occur; Joe Kido, the sensible oldest member of the team, misses an important train, while Matt Ishida and his brother T.K. enjoy time in the countryside. Izzy races to Tai's apartment, conveying alarming news about the Digimon, escalating the urgency of their situation.

In Tai's bedroom, they uncover that this digital menace threatens the integrity of technology. They discover that the virus has evolved into a monstrous form, resembling a cycloptic claw, capable of devouring data constantly. Tai longs for Agumon's presence, and just then, Agumon reaches out to Tai via the laptop, revealing he and the other Digimon are aware of the situation. They are joined by Gennai, a digital entity, who offers guidance. Tai attempts to contact the other Digidestined to rally their support, but his efforts are met with obstacles—Joe is too occupied, Matt and T.K. face challenges at home, and Sora avoids direct communication. The confusion among the friends reveals the tensions stemming from their past quarrels.

As the story progresses, the Digimon go on the offensive against the powerful Keramon. A frantic battle unfolds, wherein Greymon and Kabuterimon grapple with the evolved threat of Infermon, a formidable enemy that surfaces as the fights become increasingly intense. A countdown begins; Infermon has hacked critical systems, leading to potential nuclear disaster looming over their heads.

Empowered by teamwork and innovation, Tai and Izzy realize they must act quickly to thwart the deadly countdown initiated by Infermon. Although their Digimon face fierce opposition, they soon amalgamate into a new form, Omnimon, an embodiment of their combined strength. In a tense climax, Omnimon confronts Infermon, racing against time to thwart the missiles launched across the globe.

In the third act, set four years later, the story shifts focus to the next generation of Digidestined. T.K. and Kari are in New York, intent on visiting Mimi, but their journey leads them to realize a new threat looms. The teenage Willis, now grappling with his rogue Digimon counterpart, Kokomon, must decipher cryptic messages as he endeavors to manage the chaos ensuing from his past actions.

The narrative escalates as the Digidestined face challenges in their trek across America. Alliances are formed, battles ensue, and ultimately they discover that Kokomon's essence is tied to the past mistakes of Willis and the ensuing chaos of their digital realm. A heartfelt finale allows the characters to reflect on the enduring bonds of friendship, highlighting the resilience of both humans and their Digimon partners, as well as the promise of renewed connections, even in the face of adversity. The journey concludes with cheer and a touch of nostalgia, underscoring the theme that friendships endure beyond time and circumstance.

Digimon: Digital Monsters Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Digimon: Digital Monsters (2000): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Kokomon turn against Willis?

Kokomon turns rogue because of the emotional disconnect and loneliness that Willis experiences. Having grown up feeling isolated in Colorado without truly connecting with others, Willis's emotional state manifests in his Digimon partner's behavior. The Digital World reflects the emotional condition of its human partners, and Kokomon's transformation into a hostile force represents the consequences of Willis's personal struggles with connection and belonging.

Foreshadowing: Willis is introduced as a lonely character who struggles with feelings of isolation, establishing the emotional foundation for Kokomon's later corruption.

Q2

How does Omnimon appear in the battle?

Omnimon is formed when two of the Digidestined' Digimon combine their strength through a process of fusion. During the climactic battle against Infermon, when the Digimon face overwhelming opposition, they merge into Omnimon, a powerful hybrid Digimon that embodies the combined abilities of both partners. This fusion represents the ultimate expression of teamwork among the Digidestined, allowing them to confront and ultimately defeat the evolved threat.

Foreshadowing: The Digidestined consistently rely on teamwork throughout the film, with theirDigimon partners demonstrating the ability to digivolve into increasingly powerful forms.

Q3

Why does Greymon disappear after defeating Parrotmon?

Greymon disappears because the energy required for his transformation beyond his current state exceeds his existence. When Greymon delivers the final blow against Parrotmon, the massive release of energy causes Greymon to fade away. This sacrifice is a consequence of the digivolution process at that stage, the power needed to defeat such a powerful opponent simply cannot be sustained alongside the Digimon's physical form.

Foreshadowing: The earlier transformation from Koromon to Agumon already demonstrates how digivolution strains energy and disrupts nearby electrical devices, hinting at the unsustainable nature of higher-level transformations.

Q4

Why does Kari send Tai's apology email to Sora?

Kari sends the email because she sees an opportunity to help resolve the growing tension between Tai and Sora. While Tai is struggling to compose the perfect apology letter, Kari takes action, believing that any communication would be better than continued silence. Her decision reflects both her proactive nature and the deep concern she has for maintaining harmony among the Digidestined, though her well-intentioned intervention creates additional complications.

Foreshadowing: Kari is established as an observant character who pays close attention to the dynamics among the Digidestined, often taking initiative when she perceives a need.

Q5

How do the children become chosen as Digidestined?

The children become Digidestined after witnessing the climactic battle between Greymon and Parrotmon in 1995. The intensity of that confrontation, combined with the heroic spirit displayed by Tai and his willingness to encourage Agumon to digivolve despite the danger, marks them as worthy of being chosen. This witnessing of a genuine Digimon battle serves as the selection criterion for the Digital World to designate them as its protectors.

Foreshadowing: Kari narrates her introduction by emphasizing her role as one of the Digidestined, explaining that this was a predetermined destiny triggered by their first encounter.

Q6

What makes Infermon so dangerous?

Infermon is extremely dangerous because it evolves from a simple computer virus into a data-devouring monster capable of consuming digital information at an exponential rate. Its most terrifying capability is hacking into critical global systems, including military infrastructure, which triggers a countdown toward nuclear disaster. Infermon represents an existential threat not just to the Digital World but to all technology-dependent civilization, making the stakes impossibly high for the Digidestined.

Foreshadowing: The initial virus identified by Izzy is described as invading the internet and causing worldwide chaos, establishing the progressive nature of this digital threat.

Q7

Why can Koromon suddenly speak?

Koromon gains the ability to speak as part of its natural digivolution progression. When Digimon digivolve, they undergo significant changes including increased intelligence, communication capabilities, and physical form. Koromon's speech at sunset represents this evolutionary leap, allowing direct communication with Tai and Kari. This moment marks a turning point in their relationship, as Koromon explicitly declares them his best friends, deepening the bond between humans and Digimon.

Foreshadowing: The earlier transformation from Botamon to Koromon already showed increased size and behavior changes, indicating progressive development of the Digimon's abilities.

Q8

Why does the movie span different years?

The three-act structure spanning 1995, 2000, and 2004 serves to show the evolution of both the Digidestined and the Digital World threats. The 1995 timeline establishes the origin story and how the original Digidestined were chosen. The 2000 timeline depicts the major crisis with Infermon that tests the current team. The 2004 timeline then shows the passing of time and introduces the next generation facing new challenges, demonstrating that the battle between good and evil in the Digital World is ongoing and cyclical.

Foreshadowing: Kari introduces herself as narrator appearing in both the first and third acts, hinting at her unique perspective across different time periods.

Q9

How does Parrotmon appear?

Parrotmon hatches from a second Digiegg that appears alongside the one that produced Botamon. This massive, bird-like Digimon arrives with destructive intent, immediately attacking and burying Agumon under rubble. The simultaneous appearance of two Digieggs represents the dual nature of the Digital World, creatures that can either help or harm humans, setting up the first major conflict the Digidestined must face.

Foreshadowing: The appearance of the first Digiegg is mysterious and unexplained, with the sudden arrival of a second egg foreshadowing that not all Digital World creatures are benevolent.

Q10

Why does Agumon disappear after the Parrotmon battle?

Agumon does not actually disappear, the narrative specifically shows Greymon sacrificing himself after defeating Parrotmon. Agumon had already digivolved into Greymon to fight Parrotmon, and it is Greymon's form that dissipates after the battle. This distinction is important because Agumon later returns in the 2000 timeline, having been restored or regenerated in the Digital World between the events.

Foreshadowing: The whistle that Tai uses to revive Greymon suggests an ongoing connection between the human and Digimon worlds that transcends individual battles.

  • agumon
