In a flax‑rich region of Flanders, patriarchal farmer Vermeulen runs his estate with stern, authoritarian rule, dismissing any counsel. His wife Barbele tolerates his harshness, while their studious son Louis labors tirelessly yet receives no praise. His two sisters are sent to an upscale nunnery school. Vermeulen’s ill‑advised choice of a poorly drained field and late sowing forces the harvest to fetch a lower price, deepening the family’s hardship.
