Devdas and Paro grow up as childhood friends in a rural Bengal village. They share a deep bond despite social differences, laying the groundwork for the story's central conflict. Their early closeness hints at a future they both desire.

Devdas leaves for Calcutta to study at a boarding school, seeking education away from home. His departure marks the distance that challenges their relationship and sets the plot in motion.

Upon returning from his studies, Paro eagerly anticipates marrying Devdas, believing their love will be recognized. Their families assess the match against strict social customs that govern class and caste.

Paro's grandmother approaches Devdas' family with a marriage proposal. Devdas' mother rejects the arrangement, signaling looming opposition from Paro's and Devdas's families.

To safeguard Paro's future, Paro's father seeks an even richer husband for her to demonstrate the family's status. This move intensifies the pressure on Paro and pushes the match away from Devdas.

On learning of the arranged match, Paro secretly meets Devdas at night, risking her honor in a desperate bid to salvage their betrothal. She believes swift consent could still reunite them.

Devdas asks his parents for permission to marry Paro, but his family forbids the union due to social pressures. He is left to confront the rigid codes that separate their two families.

In a weakened moment, Devdas flees to Calcutta, hoping to escape the conflict and find a new path. The departure signals his unraveling and the widening gulf between him and Paro.

From Calcutta, Devdas writes a letter to Paro telling her that they were only friends and that there was no real love between them. The message sours their relationship and closes a door that once seemed open.

Realizing his mistake, Devdas returns to the village and declares he would do anything to save their love. Paro, however, has begun moving toward an arranged marriage.

Paro's marriage is finalized with a wealthy zamindar who is a widower with older children. She accepts the social arrangement despite her earlier feelings, marking a tragic turn.

In Calcutta, Devdas is introduced to Chandramukhi, a tawaif, by his friend Chunni Babu. Chandramukhi nurses him and a complex bond forms as his health deteriorates.

Chandramukhi falls in love with Devdas and tends to him as his despair deepens. Devdas remains torn between Paro and Chandramukhi, unable to choose.

Sensing death approaches, Devdas returns to meet Paro to fulfill his vow and see her before he dies. He travels back to the village for a last chance at reconciliation.

Devdas dies at Paro's doorstep on a dark, cold night. Paro rushes to him, but her family blocks her from stepping outside to reach him.
