Following Poland’s 1918 independence from Russian and Austro‑Hungarian rule, the new National Assembly spent four years selecting Gabriel Narutowicz—an academic exiled in Switzerland—as the nation’s first president. Soon after taking office, he falls victim to right‑wing assassins. The film dramatizes the turbulent election and his murder.
