Death at Love House

On a Hollywood tour, Joel Gregory and Donna Gregory arrive at the mansion of the infamous actress Lorna Love, who died in 1935. They are there to research her life for a book and to uncover the secrets that still haunt her name, a quest that grows from the discovery that Joel’s father once shared a complicated romance with Lorna. At the door they are greeted by the housekeeper Clara Josephs and their agent Oscar Payne, who help set the stage for a chilling investigation into a woman whose legend only feels more alive as they dig deeper into her past.

The mansion is filled with eerie reminders of Lorna’s era and influence. A portrait of Lorna hangs on the wall, painted by Joel Sr., which seems to watch the living as if it can still pull the strings of their fates. In the garden, a shrine centers the estate, and Donna spots a woman dressed in 1930s attire near it, the same shrine where Lorna’s embalmed body is kept on permanent display. The atmosphere grows tense as strange incidents accumulate, feeding both their curiosity and their unease as they try to parse truth from myth.

During their first night, film director Conan Carroll—who once directed Lorna in her breakout film Gone of Desire—arrives with grievances that Lorna destroyed his life and that Joel Sr. was the only person who ever walked away after she had supposedly said she had no soul. He leaves with a warning that they should depart, but the visit ends in chaos: Carroll is attacked by a mysterious figure, tumbles into the fountain, and dies from a heart attack. The sense that hands beyond their control are at work deepens as Donna later uncovers a blade tied to witchcraft and a photo that has been torn apart, hinting at darker histories behind Lorna’s glamour and the people who surrounded her. Joel’s exploration leads him to a locked room—revealed to be the private domain of Joel Sr. and Lorna—where clues about their shared past quietly accumulate.

A trip to Denise Christian, an aging actress who once rivaled Lorna, deepens the lore. Denise explains how Lorna systematically blocked Denise’s career and how Lorna herself sought eternal beauty through a healer, failing to sleep ever since: she lived in the spiritual world of a mysterious figure named Father Eternal Fire. Denise’s tale of vanity, manipulation, and a fragile psyche adds a layer of superstition to the mansion’s haunting aura, and Joel becomes increasingly absorbed by the legends surrounding Lorna, poring over a book about witchcraft that he discovers in the house.

As danger intensifies, an attempt is made on Donna’s life—an unseen hand tries to poison her with carbon monoxide in a locked bathroom. Joel and Clara intervene in time, saving her, and the close watch over the house tightens. Donna, torn between leaving and supporting Joel, chooses to stay, convinced that uncovering Lorna’s secrets is essential to understanding why the mansion remains a magnet for tragedy. Joel’s obsession with Lorna’s past grows, and he explains his drive as a need to uncover the deeper truth behind the glamour and the ruin that shadow her.

The couple then meets Marcella Geffenhart, whom Lorna called her best friend. Marcella speaks of Father Eternal Fire and refuses to elaborate on the blade that Donna found, though she hints at a wider, hidden circle of people connected to Lorna’s enduring power. Donna believes that Marcella is the woman who hurried past the shrine on the first day, and she insists on continuing their conversations to uncover more. Joel, wary of getting drawn into even darker revelations, tries to restrain her curiosity, arguing that some secrets are better left buried.

That evening, Joel covertly returns to Lorna’s bedroom and poring over documents, learns more about Joel Sr.’s affair with Lorna and the personal betrayals that tore at the couple’s lives. Donna, meanwhile, sees the same unnerving woman again and reaches out to Joel for aid. Oscar reveals a crucial thread: the healer’s rituals involved fire, a dangerous element that could threaten both of them. Donna races to warn Joel and finds Marcella hiding in fear, the blade still pressed against a torn photo. In a chilling discovery, Donna stumbles upon a rubber mask, a gray-haired wig, and a dress hanging on a hook, and suddenly realizes that “Clara Josephs” is alive and that Lorna Love is the one masquerading in the house.

In a desperate confrontation, Clara’s identity as the living Lorna is revealed, and Joel, under her powerful influence, kisses Donna at the shrine. Fire erupts as the spell takes hold, and Donna lunges to save him. She manages to pull Joel away from the thrall just as the truth unravels: the supposed corpse at the shrine is a wax figure, and the living Lorna—clad in disguise as Clara—has orchestrated the illusion to keep the mansion’s secrets intact. The mansion is sealed off for good, and the Gregorys depart, their investigation complete but forever marked by the haunting pull of a past that refuses to die.
