In Ballyconnen, Emmy Baudine works for the local priest. When a carnival arrives she meets boxer Dan and violently repels his advances with her fingernails. Father Corcoran sends her to Yorkshire, where a farming family takes her in and she tries to suppress her conflicted feelings toward men, until the carnival returns and Dan seeks revenge.
