Sixteen-year-old Joanna lives with her strict Aunt Martha in a low-income New York City tenement building, struggling with a mysterious inner turmoil she calls "darkness." After moving in, a biological threat originating from the Soviet Union leads to the building being sealed off, trapping the tenants inside. As food supplies diminish and Martha's authority grows, Joanna must confront her inner struggles and her aunt's actions to protect the residents. She faces the challenge of leadership while battling the fear of succumbing to the darkness within.
