Near Saint Petersburg, a secluded dance academy runs under Madame Gordenko, a stern, wheelchair-bound headmistress, with two instructors at her side: Anthony, Robert Englund, and Olga, Irina Davidoff. Into this disciplined world arrives a fresh batch of students, including Jessica Anderson, played by Michelle Zeitlin. Jessica is a young American dancer who immediately draws Anthony’s eye because she bears an uncanny resemblance to his late lover, Svetlana Svetlana Nemirovskaya—a Russian ballerina who perished in a motorcycle accident in New York.
Jessica struggles in her first ballet class, and her roommate Claudine, portrayed by Nina Goldman, offers support. After a brief spa trip, Claudine mysteriously disappears, leaving Jessica alone in the studio where she unleashes a vigorous, rock-infused style of dancing that sets her apart from the rest of the group. In time, she meets Alex, a photographer secretly sneaking into the academy to capture images of Anthony and Gordenko. Alex, played by Alexander Sergeyev, and Jessica share a spark, and she agrees to ride with him on his motorbike.
The next day Olga informs Jessica that Claudine has left the academy, but Jessica remains unconvinced about the others’ explanations. In a later lesson, Madame Gordenko pairs Jessica with another dancer, Angela, a disruption-prone performer whom Olga quietly disciplines. Angela’s talents aside, Jessica’s traditional ballet training continues to challenge her, though Gordenko sees potential.
Later, Jessica encounters Ingrid, a student who confesses she struggles with addiction as she dances alone in the attic. Anthony offers Jessica a private lesson to help her refine her technique, and she accepts, hoping to fulfill her own dream within the academy’s demanding environment.
At a recital featuring male dancers, Angela’s disruption leads to a confrontation with Olga, who removes Angela from the stage. Later, Angela is found dead—hanged from a rafter by an unseen killer. Jessica senses something sinister at work as Gordenko hints at Angela’s possible disappearance, but Ingrid tries to reassure everyone that Angela is fine.
That night, Anthony and Olga take the girls out to a nightclub. Jessica reconnects with Alex and they share a kiss, a moment that clearly affects Anthony. Meanwhile Natasha, another student, walks her boyfriend Ivan to the station before his departure; after he leaves, the mysterious killer pushes Natasha onto the tracks. Back at the academy, Anthony notices Alex sneaking into Jessica’s room, and the two of them sleep together.
The following morning brings news of Natasha’s death. Ingrid returns to the attic but is soon killed by the attacker—revealed to be Gordenko herself. With several students missing or dead, most of the academy clears out. Anthony insists that Jessica is the last real talent and urges Olga to prepare her for an upcoming audition.
Jessica follows Alex to Anthony’s quarters, where she and Olga discover Claudine and Angela’s bodies hidden in a cupboard. Gordenko appears and fatally stabs Alex. In the ensuing struggle, Olga accidentally dies in Anthony’s arms, whispering, “Our secret is safe.”
With the others gone, Jessica remains, and Anthony trains her for the audition, even dressing her in a wig to resemble Svetlana. On the eve of the performance, Jessica visits Gordenko, who suddenly attacks her. Gordenko speaks in Anthony’s voice, revealing that she and Anthony are the same person—a split personality born from Svetlana’s memory. He tries to drug Jessica, thinking she is Svetlana, and she blacks out.
Jessica awakens in her room, a bouquet of roses waiting by her bed, signed “Svetlana.” Anthony arrives with a gun, forcing her to perform at the audition. She begins by following his choreography but abruptly stops, rips off the wig, and declares she is not Svetlana. She dances in her own style, stunning the judges as the crowd watches in surprised silence.
Gordenko’s persona briefly resurfaces and attempts to shoot Jessica from the balcony. In a final act of clarity, Anthony overpowers the darker persona and hurls himself from the balcony to save her. Jessica rushes to his side, and as he dies, he whispers, “You danced for me.”
