Seventeen‑year‑old Sakutaro Matsumoto stands on Australia’s red earth, recalling a fleeting summer with Aki, whose beauty and their brief happiness feel timeless. Seventeen years later, now 34 and a graduate‑level medical researcher in Japan, he returns to his demolished high school, confronting the lingering grief of losing Aki to leukemia and realizing he has lived half‑alive without her.
