Koichi Takakura resigns as a profiler after an injury and moves with his wife Yasuko to a home closer to his new job as a university lecturer. They hope for a fresh start away from his old casework. They settle into a quiet neighborhood near the campus, starting a new chapter in their lives.

Yasuko makes an effort to be friendly and meets two neighbors: Mrs. Tanaka and her bed-ridden mother, who coldly reject any kind of friendship with the Takakuras. Yasuko also rings the doorbell at the middle neighbor’s house, but there is no answer. The stage is set for uneasy, lurking proximity with the neighbors.

When Yasuko later encounters Nishino, he claims to live with his daughter Mio and his wife, but then dismisses her rudely. His behavior around Yasuko feels off and boyishly charming at times, yet unsettling. The initial interaction leaves Yasuko with a creeping sense of danger.

At the university, Koichi shows renewed interest in a cold case involving a family disappearance. His former police colleague Nogami asks him to help investigate. The case centers on an unreliable witness, Saki Honda, and a suspicious neighbor’s involvement.

Koichi and Nogami interview Saki Honda, who recalls the Hondas acting in bizarre ways before their disappearance. She also remembers seeing a man staring from the Mizuta house next door. The clues point toward a hidden danger in the close-knit neighborhood.

While investigating the Mizuta residence, Nogami discovers five decomposing bodies sealed in plastic bags. The discovery suggests a grim pattern connected to the neighborhood and raises questions about who else might be involved. The shocking find intensifies Koichi’s suspicions about Nishino.

Mio tells Koichi that Nishino is not her biological father, hinting at a disturbing deception. She becomes wary as Nishino returns home and interacts with her and her mother. The dynamic adds to Koichi’s growing distrust of Nishino.

Yasuko begins experiencing periods of sickness and emotional outbursts, causing Koichi to suspect Nishino’s influence. He decides to involving Nogami to dig deeper into Nishino’s background. The strain tests their relationship as the mystery deepens.

Nogami accepts Nishino’s invitation and is led inside, where he descends a corridor and opens a large metal door. He discovers a hidden chamber that confirms his fears about Nishino’s secret life. The chamber links Nishino to the Mizuta murders and the disappearances.

During the investigation, the Tanaka house explodes, killing Tanaka, her mother, and Nogami. Koichi frantically tries to help, only to notice Nishino calmly watching television amid the chaos. The blast marks a brutal turning point in the case.

Police confirm that three bodies are in the wreckage: Tanaka, her mother, and Nogami. Koichi attempts to show Saki a photograph of Nishino, but she does not remember him. The revelation deepens the mystery surrounding Nishino’s true identity.

Nishino is revealed as an impostor who controls families through drugs, including Mio and her mother. He has allegedly killed Mio’s real father and had Mio dispose of him in a manner similar to the Mizuta corpses. Mio’s mother remains under tranquilizers, kept compliant by Nishino’s methods.

Nishino drags Yasuko into his chamber, shows her the mother’s corpse, and forces her to help Mio dispose of the body. Koichi returns home and searches for Yasuko, only to be confronted by Nishino who now has Yasuko’s house key. The brainwashing tightens its grip on the Takakura family.

Koichi argues with Nishino but is overpowered when the police arrive and detain him. Tanimoto takes Nishino into custody, and they track him to his next 'home' as he moves toward an abandoned building. The chase culminates in a final confrontation over control of Yasuko and Mio.

At the abandoned building, Nishino attempts to move Koichi to kill Max, but Koichi shoots Nishino, breaking the brainwashing. Mio celebrates her freedom, and Yasuko, finally understanding what they endured, breaks down in Koichi’s arms. The film ends on a fragile note of relief as the couple begins to rebuild.
