Conrad the Sailor

On a bustling battleship powered by anthropomorphic cats that have a peculiar resemblance to dogs due to their small ears, the story unfolds with lively musical moments and humorous encounters. Many of the ship’s crew sing together in the opening scene, performing “The Song of the Marines (Shovin’ Right Off Again),” which serves as a cheerful chorus that sets the tone for the antics to come. Among these characters is Conrad, voiced by Pinto Colvig, who speaks and sings with the comedic voice reminiscent of the classic Disney character “Goofy.” He is seen diligently swabbing the deck, humming and singing as he goes about his duties.

The focus quickly shifts to Daffy Duck, voiced by Mel Blanc, who appears mischievous and full of pranks. Daffy is perched atop the ship’s mast, observing Conrad’s work while deliberately leaving muddy footprints on the deck—an obvious prank that irritates Conrad. Daffy’s antics continue as he mocks Conrad’s singing and movement, openly criticizing him to the audience with a sarcastic comment, “Phew, is that guy awful? Gee, it makes me sick.” Meanwhile, Conrad attempts to ignore Daffy’s disruptive behavior, but Daffy’s mischief escalates when he swaps Conrad’s water bucket with a paint bucket. As a result, Conrad unintentionally splatters paint all over the deck, and Daffy lazily comments, “Very sloppy, Roscoe. You’re a slovenly housekeeper.”

This sparks Conrad’s frustration, leading him to throw a mop at Daffy, who skillfully catches it and proceeds to perform a short vaudeville routine, turning the chore into comic entertainment. The chaos reaches a peak when Daffy, teasing Conrad further, tosses the mop into the air, shouting “Catch! Catch!” only for it to land squarely on Conrad’s head. The scene becomes even more comical as Daffy, now atop the mop, taunts, “Very petite, Betsy. Very, very petite,” while sliding down the mop. An infuriated Conrad, fed up with Daffy’s antics, chases him across the deck, but Daffy’s cleverness lets him outwit Conrad at every turn—using hiding spots like a lifeboat and mistaken identity moments, such as Conrad confusing Daffy for a telescope.

Throughout the cartoon, a recurring gag is the abrupt halting of all action whenever the ship’s tiny but stern Admiral appears. Both sailors and Daffy snap to attention, saluting in unison, emphasizing the strict hierarchy and discipline aboard the ship. This comedic effect is played out repeatedly, adding a layer of humor to the otherwise chaotic scenes.

The story’s climax involves Daffy’s continual evasion as both he’s chased by Conrad and ultimately by a large shell fired from the ship’s heavy artillery. As the shell zooms through the air, all three—Daffy, Conrad, and the shell—pause momentarily with perfect timing, snapping to attention as the Admiral walks past, creating a humorous visual of military discipline amidst chaos. The cartoon concludes with Daffy and Conrad still in pursuit of one another, with the chase ending as the cartoon naturally fades out in an iris shot, leaving the audience with the playful chaos of shipboard life and Daffy’s relentless pranks.

This lively, humor-filled animated story combines musical elements, slapstick comedy, and witty visuals, making it a memorable example of classic cartoon entertainment with characters that are both amusing and timeless.
