Come Here, Mukhtar!

An East European Shepherd is discovered abandoned inside a rail car and is taken to the police station. Junior Police Lieutenant Nikolay Glazychev is summoned to free the dog and deliver him to the police kennel. This event marks the start of Mukhtar's long service with the police.

The dog's owner is found but refuses to take Mukhtar and sells him to militsiya for 100 rubles. Mukhtar is assigned to Glazychev at the police kennel and begins his service as a police dog. This transfer sets Mukhtar on a path of training and duty.

Mukhtar begins formal training under Glazychev, learning basic commands and lessons. The training progresses with some difficulties, but the dog gradually gains discipline and usefulness. Mukhtar forms a bond with Glazychev as they work together.

Mukhtar helps solve a series of household crimes, each small but contributing to overall police work. The crimes are numerous, and the stolen goods recovered with Mukhtar's help exceed 3 million Soviet rubles. The dog's contributions earn him growing recognition within the precinct.

During winter, Glazychev and Mukhtar pursue the killer Frolov. They encounter two of his henchmen and apprehend them along the way. Frolov asks for shelter in a village, but when asked for documents, he injures a kolkhoz guard; a heavy snowstorm hampers their search.

Frolov is tracked to a train station and takes cover in a train car, firing at the pursuing officers. The task force commander decides to let Mukhtar enter the car, and the dog rushes in, breaking free from his leash. In the ensuing struggle, Mukhtar bites the criminal's throat and is seriously wounded.

The doctor saves Mukhtar's life, but a bullet grazes his brain, leaving him unable to serve. This injury ends his active service and casts his future into uncertainty.

Despite his service, Mukhtar's future is uncertain as the kennel director contemplates culling the wounded dog. Glazychev and colleagues push to find a way to retain him.

Glazychev spends weeks visiting officials, petitioning to keep Mukhtar on the state payroll. He argues Mukhtar's role in incapacitating Frolov proves the dog's ongoing value.

The police commissioner, recalling Mukhtar's contribution to incapacitating Frolov, approves the petition. The decision secures Mukhtar's future and keeps him at the kennel.

Mukhtar remains at the kennel, continuing to serve under Glazychev and assisting with ongoing cases. Though injured, he remains a symbol of loyalty and service.
