Clouds Over Borsk

In the provincial settlement of Borsk, Kira Sergeyevna, a young physics teacher fresh out of university, arrives to start her career. She is tasked with guiding a challenging ninth-grade class of “war children” — a group of independent yet emotionally unsettled teens — and the town’s social fabric soon reveals a web of personal and communal struggles playing out inside the classroom and beyond. Among the pupils is Olya Ryzhkova, a girl who lives with a distant, workaholic father and seeks solace in public service as a Pioneer leader. Olya’s outward confidence masks a deeper ache, and her official duties leave her yearning for something more authentic than formal roles can provide.

At first, Olya finds a confidante in Kira Sergeyevna, but their budding friendship frays as the teacher, cautious about professional boundaries, keeps the relationship strictly formal. Heartache follows, and Olya withdraws from school life, feeling increasingly isolated and desperate for understanding. This loneliness pushes her toward an unlikely ally in her aloof classmate, Mitya Sayenko, a devout Pentecostal orphan who invites her into his religious circle. As the sect’s influence grows, Olya’s school and family connections weaken, and the boundaries between right and wrong begin to blur.
