In the mid-1930s, Dave Logan is inspired by Lindbergh’s historic nonstop crossing of the Atlantic and sets out to build and pilot an ocean‑going flying boat that could carry people from San Francisco to China. His wife, Jean, and his boss, Jim Horn, urge caution and doubt whether such a bold project can be sustained, while Logan’s resolve grows even stronger.

To turn this dream into reality, he teams with his World War I pilot friend Tom Collins and the seasoned aircraft designer Dad Brunn. They launch an airline serving the Northeast, operating between Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. The venture struggles and ultimately fails, testing loyalties and the feasibility of their plan.

Undeterred, they pivot to a second venture based in Key West, Florida, delivering mail across the Caribbean. Another pilot ally, Hap Stuart, joins as the operation begins to prosper.

With this growing success, Logan’s dream to fly the Pacific intensifies. He becomes consumed by the mission, straining his relationships with his wife and friends. The obsession costs them dearly, with Jean leaving and Hap stepping away at times. Logan mortgages his South American route to finance the Pacific project, and his sacrifice brings Hap back to fly the new airframe.

The China Clipper becomes the capstone project for Brunn, who dies of heart disease shortly after takeoff. When the Clipper meets a brutal typhoon off the China coast, Logan contemplates canceling, but Hap executes a daring last-minute landing that secures a crucial aviation contract. The victory vindicates Logan’s lifelong pursuit, though it leaves him sobered by the costs borne along the way. In the end, he and Jean are reunited, and the film closes with the promise that Dave Logan’s dream of a truly worldwide international airline has a future.
