Dave Logan is inspired by Charles Lindbergh's historic nonstop Atlantic flight and becomes determined to build an ocean-going flying boat that can carry passengers from San Francisco to China. He sees it as the next great aviation milestone and pursues the project despite widespread skepticism from his wife, boss, and peers.

Jean leaves Logan because his obsessive pursuit of the Pacific flight creates unbearable strain on their marriage. His single-minded dedication to the project makes life difficult for her and his friends, leading her to step away from the relationship.
