Professor Abanish Mitra, who teaches botany, is newly married to Sulekha. He is known for his pranks and playful nature, contrasting with his academic reputation. Sulekha admires her brother-in-law, Advocate Prashanta Ghosh, and looks up to him as her idol, setting the stage for her admiration and subsequent insecurities.

Prashanta Ghosh writes a letter to Sulekha and her brother Haripada, requesting a driver who can speak good Bengali, as his current driver uses improper dialect. This creates an opportunity for Abanish to get closer to Prashanta by playing a prank, which he plans to execute by disguising himself.

Abanish travels to Allahabad and disguises himself as 'Gourhari Basu,' a boisterous Bengali-speaking driver who hates English. He adopts this persona to impress Prashanta and to play a practical joke, while pretending to be ignorant of English language and tech concerns.

Gourhari impresses Prashanta and Labanya with his knowledge of driving and mechanics, and is considered a valuable addition to the household. Despite his positive qualities, Gourhari continuously raises silly questions about English and language, adding humor to his character.

Sulekha informs Prashanta and Labanya that she will be arriving after a few days due to pressing work, although she is actually planning to join Abanish in Allahabad for their honeymoon. She tells a lie to keep her plans secret, leading to anticipation and suspicion.

While Sulekha spends time with Gourhari, her interactions become increasingly intimate, including singing and sitting together in the car. Prashanta and Labanya notice her behavior and start to suspect an affair or inappropriate relationship, which causes concern and annoyance.

Suspicion deepens when a packet of cigarettes and a burnt cigarette are found in Sulekha's room—items that Abanish had accidentally smoked. These clues intensify Prashanta and Labanya's doubts about her fidelity and relationship with Gourhari.

Abanish and Sulekha secretly leave Prashanta’s house and head to Kanpur for their honeymoon, leaving their family disappointed and confused. This act marks a major turning point, as their departure cements the start of their own adventure.

Abanish enlists his friend Subimal Ghosh, a physics professor, to pose as him while pretending to be a serious, boring lecturer. This plan creates a double-layered deception aimed at confusing their family and friends about Abanish’s whereabouts.

Subimal, pretending to be Abanish, develops romantic feelings for Basudha, Binoy's younger sister, creating complications and suspicion among the others. Basudha initially believes he is Abanish, adding to the misunderstanding.

Subimal and Basudha runaway and get married in a temple with Binoy’s blessings. This act resolves some of the romantic misunderstandings and completes their subplot, while also adding humor to the story.

In the climax, Gourhari, Sulekha, and others gather at the temple, where Haripada coerces Gourhari to 'kill' himself to reveal the truth about Abanish. This brings all characters together to uncover the entire prank and deception.

Prashanta and the family realize they have been fooled by the elaborate prank. Ultimately, they accept the humor in the situation, and Prashanta admits he was truly fooled, bringing resolution and comedy to the story.
