Professor Abanish Mitra, a dedicated botany teacher, has recently entered into marriage with Sulekha. Known for his playful nature and penchant for pranks, he stands in stark contrast to typical academic figures, often bringing humor and unpredictability into his surroundings. Conversely, Sulekha holds a deep admiration for her sister Labanya’s husband, Prashanta Ghosh, whom she regards as exceptionally intelligent and sophisticated. She often speaks highly of him, idolizing his intellect and demeanor, which unknowingly sows the seeds of insecurity in Abanish.
This admiration prompts Abanish to feel an intense desire to prove his own worth, leading him to devise a clever plan to meet and interact with Prashanta. Meanwhile, Prashanta, who is very particular about manners and language, has requested a driver from Allahabad who can speak Bengali fluently, as his current driver, Mosaheb Lal, is known for his improper dialect. He writes to Haripada, Sulekha’s brother, asking him to send a suitable chauffeur. This request gives Abanish the perfect opportunity to stage an amusing disguise and surveillance mission, leading him to pretend to be “Gourhari Basu,” a boisterous driver who eschews English and claims to speak only Bengali with a strong accent, much to Prashanta’s delight and amusement.
Both Tarun Kumar (as Binoy) and Samita Biswas (as Latika) help set the stage for this prank. In their story, Gourhari seems like a perfect fit, impressing Prashanta and Labanya with his supposed driving skills and mechanical expertise. However, Gourhari’s real personality remains mischievous—constantly questioning the quirkiest aspects of the English language and making silly inquiries about their ways and customs. His exaggerated disdain for English and love for speaking only Bengali come across as both humorous and endearing.
As Sulekha plans her visit to Allahabad, she invents a story that she will arrive after some days due to pressing work, secretly preparing Gourhari for his role. Her affectionate interactions with Gourhari, which include singing, talking, and sitting close during rides, begin to arouse curiosity and suspicion in Prashanta and Labanya about her relationship with the driver. Their fears grow worse when they find a burnt cigarette and a packet of cigarettes in Sulekha’s room—items that Abanish himself had accidentally smoked. These clues hint at a possible affair, fueling their concern that the innocent Sulekha might be involved in something illicit with the driver.
In an unexpected turn of events, Abanish and Sulekha elope from Allahabad to Kanpur to begin their honeymoon, shocking Prashanta and Labanya. To keep up the ruse, Abanish hires his old friend, Subhendu Chatterjee, as a stand-in, presenting him as a serious, dull lecturer to maintain the illusion of his absence. Meanwhile, his close friend from Allahabad, Tarun Kumar, also helps coordinate the prank. The trickery escalates as Subimal—posing as Abanish—falls in love with Basudha, Jyotsna Biswas, Binoy’s younger sister, which introduces new complications and misunderstandings.
Initially mistaken for infidelity, the unfolding story leads to a humorous and heartfelt climax. Subimal and Basudha, realizing their feelings for each other, decide to marry secretly in a temple, with Binoy’s blessing. The climax reaches its peak when Gourhari reappears alongside Sulekha, and Haripada pressures Gourhari to “end” himself to reveal the truth. This ultimately exposes the elaborate deception, leaving Prashanta, Labanya, and Latika (played by Samita Biswas) to acknowledge how they were thoroughly duped.
Throughout this comedy of errors, the characters navigate misunderstandings, mistaken identities, and romance, culminating in a resolution that emphasizes humor, love, and forgiveness. The film masterfully showcases how playful schemes and genuine emotions can come together to resolve complex relationships, all set against a backdrop of witty misadventures and charming characters.
