This confession comes as she faces death and represents the culmination of a family secret she kept for years. The revelation fundamentally changes Cetto's understanding of his origins and sets the entire monarchical plot in motion.

The Two Calabrias is Count Venanzio's proposed restoration of monarchy that Cetto is convinced to lead. Rather than restoring the traditional Bourbon monarchy of Sicily, Venanzio cheekily renames the project the 'Two Calabrias' because, he argues, one Sicily is already plenty. The project aims to overturn Italy's democratic republic and establish Cetto as ruler of this new monarchical state.

Petra shoots Cetto as an act of revenge after being forced to step aside so he could marry the Infanta of Portugal for political convenience.
