Cetto returns to his birth town after an elderly aunt's deathbed summons and shockingly learns that his father was Buffo di Calabria, a royal figure. The aunt's confession overturns everything he believed about his origins. The revelation unsettles him and opens the door to new royal ambitions.

In Carmen's convent, he seeks written confirmation of his noble birth, hoping to find proof to legitimise his new ambitions. She offers no solid evidence and remains emotionally distant, leaving him uncertain. He also notices the drastic changes in his ex-wife's life and his son Melo's ascent to mayor.

Count Venanzio approaches Cetto and pushes him to embrace his noble birth and to aim for a Bourbon-style restoration, renaming it the Two Calabrias. He argues that democracy has failed and that Cetto is the right man to restore order and glory. The idea plants a seed of ambition in Cetto.

Cetto begins to warm to the idea of monarchy, imagining himself as a restored ruler. He contemplates the symbolism of a noble lineage and endorses the plan to create a royal state, while still living in his German life. The prospect gradually captivates him and reshapes his ambitions.

To solidify his rule, Cetto is ordered to leave Petra and marry the Infanta of Portugal. Petra departs with a vow of revenge, while Cetto reluctantly follows the orders, stepping deeper into the royal plot. The personal and political ties begin to fracture as the plan progresses.

Immediately after, Petra wounds him with a pistol, interrupting the ceremony, though he survives and resolves to continue his quest for monarchical power. The event seals his resolve despite the setback.

Recovered from the wound, Cetto persists in his monarchical delusions, determined to reshape Italy in a royal mold. The experience reinforces his belief that power and prestige justify any means, and he presses on with his plans. Petra's revenge remains a dark undercurrent guiding his future actions.
