In New York City, a city pulsing with ambition and shifting loyalties, Lee Simon navigates a life he never quite earned: an unsuccessful novelist turned fame-hunting celebrity journalist. He thrives on attention, chasing interviews and headlines, but his true aim remains elusive. During a set visit with the movie star Nicole Oliver, Lee’s attention strays to Nola, a young background extra who catches his eye. Their flirtation hints at something more than a routine interview, and Nicole, seeing the deal-making potential in Lee, takes him to visit her childhood home. There, a charged moment unfolds as Nicole offers him oral sex, and Lee pivots quickly to pitching her on a screenplay he’s written, trying to turn personal fascination into professional leverage.

The day escalates into nightlife spectacle. At a fashion show, Lee’s 1967 Aston Martin becomes a magnet for eye contact and desire when a deeply sensitive supermodel responds to him with unmistakable interest. She invites him home after a night out, only to storm off in disappointment when Lee, distracted, crashes his car into a store window—an emblematic misstep that follows him through the story as a symptom of his impulsive, self-centered pursuit of happiness.

Meanwhile, Lee’s ex-wife Robin is caught in the aftershocks of their sixteen-year marriage ending. She’s drifting through a Catholic retreat while reconciling her new life with old neuroses. At a plastic surgery consultation, she meets Tony Gardella, a boisterous television producer who invites her to a film premiere. A chance encounter with Lee at the premiere scene becomes another collision of past and present: Lee’s date Bonnie, a well-connected editor, learns from Lee how a midlife crisis at his high school reunion inspired him to chase a new life. The moment turns awkward when Bonnie witnesses Lee collapses in embarrassment at a literary party, a scene that starkly reveals his insecurities.

Robin’s arc blossoms into romance as she partners with Tony, who hires her to schedule guests for a tabloid talk show and introduces her to his large, chaotic extended family. Lee, meanwhile, endures a wild day with Brandon Darrow, a volatile young movie star whose hotel-room fracas nearly lands him in trouble with the law. Brandon, impressed by Lee’s screenplay curiosity, invites him to join in a group sex scenario, but the project’s timing never aligns with Brandon’s current commitments. Robin, not leaving things to chance, seeks guidance in surprising places, visiting a sex worker for tips, and a dramatic moment arises when she has to save the worker from choking on a banana.

With the novel finally completed, Lee crosses paths with Nola once more. She invites him to meet later that night, and, after a tense lie to Bonnie, Lee slips away to be with her. The pair share a charged, intimate night in Nola’s apartment, and in the morning, the reality of Lee’s other commitments intrudes: Bonnie is moving in with him, and he admits he has found someone else, leaving Bonnie to depart with the sole copy of his manuscript. In a desperate chase to the pier, Lee watches as Bonnie boards a ferry and tosses the manuscript into the water, a cinematic image that seals the emotional tension between them.

Robin, embracing a more polished persona, has transformed into a makeover-driven celebrity and launches her own interview program, moving toward marriage with Tony. She eventually runs away from the wedding but, after an impromptu psychic session, chooses to proceed with the ceremony and embraces the possibility of genuine happiness. Yet Lee’s own insecurities continue to threaten his bond with Nola, underscoring the fragile balance between his ambitions and personal fulfillment.

The final act unfolds at Nicole Oliver’s movie premiere, where the ever-changing dynamics of love and career collide. Robin—now portrayed as successful, married, and pregnant—reencounters the man who still wrestles with happiness and purpose, Lee. Their paths brush against each other one last time, leaving Lee to confront the question of what true contentment means for him. The film closes on a note of unresolved longing and cautious optimism, a meditation on how fame, love, and self-doubt intertwine in the lives of people who chase after more than they can fully grasp.
