Based on Jim Harrison’s novel *Farmer*, the film follows 47‑year‑old Joseph Svenden, who lives on his family farm caring for his dying mother and teaches a two‑room school with Rosealee, his lover and a widow. When the district expands, he learns his job will end and becomes involved with 17‑year‑old student Catherine. The affair and job loss force him to reevaluate his stagnant life and choose a new path.
