What Happens in Byzantium: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Byzantium (2013) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

In the year 2010, an elderly gentleman named Robert Fowlds discovers a discarded note left behind by a teenage vampire, Eleanor Webb. Intrigued by her words, he invites her into his home, revealing that he is ready to embrace death. In a chilling turn of events, Eleanor kills him to feed on his blood. Meanwhile, Eleanor's mother, Clara, finds herself on the run from her past, having just fled from a lap-dancing club where she worked. In pursuit of Eleanor, a member of the vampiric Brethren named Werner chases her down, ultimately facing the mortal wrath of Clara when she decapitates him and escapes with her daughter.

Seeking refuge, Clara and Eleanor settle in a rundown coastal resort where Clara meets Noel, an unsuspecting man who recently inherited the Byzantium Hotel, a once-bustling establishment now in disrepair. Eleanor captivates those around her by playing the piano at a local restaurant, where she catches the eye of Frank, a young American waiter who expresses interest in her. As Clara seduces Noel and transforms the hotel into a makeshift brothel, Eleanor starts attending college alongside Frank. Curious about her mysterious past, Frank encourages Eleanor to share her story, which she writes down for him, yet he questions the truth of her narrative, ultimately sharing it with their teacher, Kevin.

The film unfolds through a mix of present events and flashbacks to the Napoleonic Wars. Clara's journey begins when she encounters two Royal Navy officers, Captain Ruthven and Midshipman Darvell, ultimately choosing to leave with Ruthven, who subjects her to a life of prostitution following a brutal assault. When Eleanor is born in 1804, Clara, in a moment of despair, leaves her daughter at an orphanage. As time passes, Clara, seemingly ill with tuberculosis, is visited by the vampire Darvell, who provides Ruthven with a map to a mystical island where one can become a vampire if prepared to die. After another confrontation with Ruthven, Clara shoots him and ventures to the island, where she seeks to embrace vampirism.

Upon being accepted into the Brethren, a secret society of predominantly male vampires, Clara's lowly status as a former prostitute draws the ire of its members, yet they spare her life and impose strict codes she must follow. Out of sheer desperation, she secretly visits Eleanor, only to discover that her choices have dire consequences. The villainous Captain Ruthven reappears, dragging Eleanor into a grim fate at the orphanage. Clara intervenes too late, resulting in Eleanor facing a torturous existence. With a mother’s love driving her, Clara decides to turn Eleanor into a vampire, breaking the Brethren's irrevocable rules.

Fast forward to the 21st century, as Eleanor and Frank develop true feelings for each other, prompting her to assist him in becoming a vampire to escape his terminal leukemia. However, complications arise. After learning that Eleanor divulged their history to Frank, Clara is torn between her protective instincts and the restoration of their lives. An unfortunate accident leads to Noel's death, making matters more complex as Clara seeks to shield her daughter from further danger.

The Brethren, relentless in their pursuit, capture Eleanor and take her to an eerie abandoned fairground with the intention of destroying her. In a climactic showdown, Clara confronts them, which leads to a series of tense confrontations. After a fierce battle, Clara faces Savella, the leader of the Brethren, who wields a long-standing grudge against her. In a twist of fate, Darvell, harboring silent feelings for Clara, ends up killing Savella instead of her, allowing Clara to flee alongside Darvell while Eleanor rushes Frank to the island for his transformation.

Thus, the tale of Eleanor and Clara becomes one of love, betrayal, and the ongoing struggle for survival against the dark forces of their world.

Byzantium Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Byzantium (2013): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why did Clara turn Eleanor into a vampire?

Clara turned Eleanor into a vampire in Byzantium after Captain Ruthven tracked them to the orphanage and nearly killed Eleanor during a violent attack. Unable to watch her daughter die, Clara transformed her to save her life, an act that directly defied the Brethren's most sacred rule against creating new vampires without permission. This single desperate decision sealed both their fates as fugitives from the vampire society for centuries to come.

Foreshadowing: Clara's earlier secret visits to Eleanor at the orphanage hint at how far she would eventually go to keep her daughter alive.

  • clara turning eleanor
  • vampire creation
  • brethren law
  • mother-daughter vampires
  • unauthorized transformation
Q2

Why do the Brethren want to destroy Clara and Eleanor?

The Brethren pursue Clara and Eleanor because Clara committed what they consider the ultimate sin: creating a new vampire without their authorization. This rule is treated as absolute within their secret society, and Clara's violation of it threatens their entire existence. As a result, the Brethren dedicate themselves across centuries to hunting down both mother and daughter in Byzantium, never relenting in their pursuit.

  • brethren vampire society
  • unauthorized creation
  • vampire hunters
  • secret rules
  • centuries-long pursuit
Q3

Why did Darvell betray the Brethren to save Clara?

Darvell killed Savella to protect Clara because he had silently loved her for centuries, ever since she was first turned into a vampire on the island. Despite being a member of the Brethren himself, his feelings for Clara outweighed his loyalty to the vampire hierarchy in that final moment at the abandoned fairground. His intervention allowed Clara to escape alive while he took her place as the Brethren's new target.

Foreshadowing: Darvell's earlier visit to Clara when she appeared to be dying of tuberculosis hints at the depth of his unspoken devotion.

  • darvell betrayal
  • savella death
  • vampire love
  • clara rescue
  • final confrontation
Q4

What happened at the orphanage that pushed Clara to break the rules?

Captain Ruthven tracked Clara and Eleanor to the orphanage and launched a vicious attack that left Eleanor severely wounded and close to death. Clara arrived too late to stop the assault, and the only way to save Eleanor's life was to give her vampirism. This desperate act transformed Clara from a rule-abiding member of the Brethren into their most wanted fugitive.

Foreshadowing: Ruthven's earlier assault on Clara during the Napoleonic Wars establishes him as a long-term threat who will not stop hunting her.

  • orphanage attack
  • ruthven revenge
  • eleanor wounded
  • rules broken
  • clara's turning point
Q5

How does someone become a vampire on the island?

According to the legend revealed in Byzantium, anyone who travels to the mystical island prepared to die can be transformed into a vampire upon their death there. Clara made this journey herself after being shot by Ruthven during the Napoleonic era, and later Eleanor brings Frank to the same island to save him from terminal leukemia. The transformation requires the traveler to fully accept their own mortality before reaching its shores.

Foreshadowing: Darvell giving Ruthven the map to the island earlier hints at the mysterious power tied to that place.

Q6

Why did Clara turn the Byzantium Hotel into a brothel?

It also generated the income the mother-daughter pair needed to remain hidden from the Brethren's ongoing pursuit.

Why does Eleanor want to turn Frank into a vampire?

Her choice ultimately puts her at odds with Clara, who fears the act will draw even more lethal attention from the Brethren.

  • frank leukemia
  • turning frank
  • terminal illness
  • eleanor frank love
  • escape mortality
Q8

What is Savella's personal grudge against Clara?

Savella harbors a long-standing resentment toward Clara because she was admitted into the Brethren despite her background as a former prostitute, an offense to their rigid class hierarchy. This perceived insult, combined with Clara's later unauthorized creation of Eleanor, gave Savella a personal motive to see her destroyed. Her grudge is what drives the Brethren's final assault at the abandoned fairground in Byzantium.

  • savella grudge

Q9

Why did Eleanor write her life story for Frank?
