In a dystopian near future, Europe descends into chaos as right-wing extremists seize control. Germany transforms into a totalitarian regime, persecuting those who oppose it. Lawyer Jan Schneider, who has defended victims of the new order, finds himself targeted and forced to flee with his wife Sarah and their two children, Nora and Nick. Their destination is the South African Union, a beacon of stability and prosperity. They attempt to reach Cape Town aboard a freighter carrying other refugees, but are callously abandoned in small boats off the coast of Namibia. A perilous journey ensues, marked by rough seas and tragedy when young Nick is lost at sea, leaving his fate uncertain.
