In 1979, Jimmy Bones, a beloved numbers runner and protector, is betrayed and murdered by corrupt cop Lupovich and drug dealer Eddie Mack. They force his associates, Jeremiah and Shotgun, to take turns stabbing him to death, while Pearl attempts suicide but is spared by Jimmy's protective spirit. After his death, Pearl buries him with his dress, and Bones' elegant brownstone becomes his tomb and is sealed off from the neighborhood.
