What Happens in Birds of Prey: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Birds of Prey (1973) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

A helicopter pilot, Harry Walker, spots an armored-car heist erupting over downtown Salt Lake City as bearded gunmen gun down the guards, seize a canvas sack of currency, and snatch a female hostage before shoving her into their getaway car. He relays the chaos to his old military commander, Jim McAndrew, and rips into the pursuit, trusting his training and nerve to close the distance.

The hostage is identified as Teresa Janice "T.J." Shaw, a bank employee who is due to marry that Friday. Walker’s quick rescue pulls her from danger, and she reveals she’s never been far from Salt Lake City in her twenty-two years, having known her fiancé since childhood. A soft, budding tension appears between them as she confesses a kind of fascination, and she plants three quick, fluttering kisses on him, leaving him momentarily swept up by the moment.

The next morning, Walker directs Shaw to head to the nearby highway and hitch a ride after he lifts off to continue the chase. The pursuit intensifies as a police pilot in a Piper Arrow joins, while McAndrew coordinates from the ground, both crews converging on an abandoned airfield believed to hide the robbers’ getaway plane and a pilot ready to fly them to Mexico. The pair of helicopters closes in, and the bank employee’s information proves correct: a getaway plane awaits.

Walker drives the confrontation to a dramatic point inside the hangar, where he forces a showdown with the bandits’ helicopter and slips the stolen cash out to McAndrew. In a bold, high-stakes move, Walker rams his helicopter into the bandit’s aircraft to save his partner. The police pilot quickly arrives on the scene, and McAndrew confirms their next target:追 after the getaway pilot, who has just fled in a Cessna 206 following the crash.

Why does Harry Walker, a traffic reporter, decide to chase the bank robbers?

Harry Walker is a former military pilot who now flies helicopters for a radio station delivering traffic reports. When he spots the armored car heist unfolding downtown, he immediately contacts his old military commander Jim McAndrew and decides to pursue the criminals using his helicopter piloting skills. His training and experience drive him to take action rather than simply report the crime from above.

Q2

How does Walker know where the robbers are headed?

After rescuing hostage T.J. Shaw, she provides crucial information about the robbers' plans. She tells Walker about a getaway plane and pilot waiting at an abandoned airfield to fly the criminals to Mexico. Walker uses this intelligence, combined with coordination from McAndrew on the ground, to track the robbers to the abandoned airfield where the escape plane is waiting.

Foreshadowing: Earlier in the film, the robbers' plan to escape by plane to Mexico is mentioned, giving Walker a target to pursue.

Q3

What do the fingerprints at the crime scene reveal?

McAndrew informs Walker that fingerprints lifted from the robbery scene tie two of the bandits to former Marines who served in Vietnam. This detail establishes that the criminals are highly trained and dangerous, which also explains why law enforcement suspects the helicopter pilot assisting them is similarly skilled.

Q4

Why does Walker ram his helicopter into the bandits' aircraft?

Walker deliberately crashes his helicopter into the bandits' helicopter inside the hangar to prevent them from taking off with the stolen cash and to protect his partner McAndrew. Does the police catch the main villain at the end?

The resolution is incomplete. While Walker successfully saves the hostage T.J. Shaw and thwart the robbery by forcing the bandits to crash their helicopter, the main antagonist, the getaway pilot, escapes. After seeing the crash, the pilot flees in a Cessna 206, and McAndrew announces they will pursue this remaining target.
