Obie runs away because he cannot cope with the sudden loss of his father. While at school, seeing another father drop off his child triggers overwhelming grief, and he flees the reminders of his loss. When they arrive, Scam spots his father among the workers, and they rush to reunite. The watch is traded to the ferryman for passage across the river to reach the town.

The final ferry crossing serves as a literal and symbolic transition for both boys. Scam and his father ride the ferry back across the water with Obie, marking the end of their quest. For Obie, this moment represents accepting his father's death while finding hope in new family bonds. The scene closes with Obie's mother waiting for him, suggesting healing and a return home is possible.

Miss Hanks runs the hotel where Scam lives on the South Side. She provides a maternal presence and allows Obie to stay. Later, when Doc and Dickie pressure her for information about Scam, she eventually reveals Scam's name under duress, leading the hitmen to pursue the boys. Her character represents the fragile adult protection available to the children.
