After the war, soldier Christoffel bargains with the devil: money if he spends seven years without washing, cutting his hair or nails, and sleeping in a bed. The condition isolates him; he ends up in prison, pays a goldsmith’s debts and wins the goldsmith’s daughter Katarina’s affection, but leaves her, ashamed of his look. When the term ends, the devil cleanses him, returning him as a well‑groomed man.
