After leaving the army a soldier cannot return home or find work. In desperation he bargains with the Devil, who offers a seven‑year pact: he must carry an ever‑full purse of gold while wearing a bearskin and abstaining from prayer, washing or cutting his hair. If he endures the term he keeps the gold; if he dies, his soul belongs to the Devil.
