Bayou

Martin Davis, Peter Graves, a young Yankee architect, arrives in New Orleans from the North to compete for the design of a new civic auditorium. His journey soon leads him to the Cajun country along the bayous, where he crosses paths with a spirited local scene and the people who inhabit it. There, he meets Marie Lita Milan, a hardworking Cajun crabber who supports herself and her partly senile, alcoholic father, Herbert. Marie’s world is not kind to her: a local storekeeper named Ulysses Timothy Carey harbors a dangerous, possessive interest in her and has already made threats, casting a shadow over her everyday life.

As Martin becomes entangled in the carnival rhythms and the local politics of the area, he lends a hand when Marie’s money is stolen, helping her recover what was taken. In gratitude and curiosity, Martin asks Marie to act as his guide for the carnival’s activities, inviting her to share in his plans to win the confidence of the area’s building commissioner. To bolster his chances at making a lasting impression, Martin’s contractor friend Jim Tallant enters him in a race using pirogues—hollowed-out canoes carved from tree trunks—an event that stirs up friendly rivalry and local pride.

The race is a tense duel of wrawn nerves and remote loyalties. Ulysses, who resents Martin’s growing interest in Marie, deliberately cuts in front of Martin’s canoe and takes the win, a petty reminder of the power he wields in this corner of the bayou. Martin, though frustrated, remains drawn to Marie and decides to stay longer in the region to pursue her. The tension between Martin and Ulysses grows, and Ulysses makes a direct threat: he will harm Marie unless Herbert intervenes and gets rid of Martin.

A shivaree—an old-world celebration of a union—provides a vivid backdrop for the story’s next turning point. Marie performs a traditional folk dance, showcasing grace and resilience, while Ulysses answers with a provocative, gyrating ritual of his own that culminates in a public challenge to a fight with Martin. Martin refuses to be drawn into a brutal confrontation, choosing instead to walk away from the provocation. Fate, however, has other plans when a hurricane roars in from the Gulf and spreads devastation across the bayou. Wind roars, trees topple, and the lovers take shelter in an unoccupied house as the storm tests their resolve and their fragile hopes for a future together.

In the aftermath, Martin gathers his courage and proposes marriage to Marie, who accepts, her voice steady in the gale’s aftermath. The hurricane’s destruction mirrors the personal storms that have raged in their lives, shaking loose the old tensions of the bayou. At Herbert’s funeral, where grief and anger mingle with hardship, Ulysses makes one final push to break the couple apart, taunting Martin into a brutal fight. This time, Martin prevails, leaving the bayou behind with Marie to start anew in the North, where a different life—one built on partnership, risk, and shared dreams—awaits.
