Battle of the Bulge

Hessler refuses to bypass Amblève because he believes that winning a pitched battle against the Americans will break their will to fight. Despite General Kohler's orders to bypass the town and push toward the Meuse, Hessler argues that destroying the American defenders in a frontal assault would deal a psychological blow to the Allies that a mere bypass could never achieve. This decision proves costly as it allows the Americans time to regroup and ultimately contributes to the German defeat.

The fuel depot is crucial because the German forces are running critically low on gasoline. Their King Tiger tanks, while powerful, require enormous amounts of fuel to operate. Without the depot's supplies, Hessler's entire brigade would be stranded and unable to continue their push toward the Meuse. This makes the depot the single most important strategic target for both sides in the movie's climax.

Kiley urges the defenders to burn the depot to deny the Germans their dwindling fuel supply. With the Germans desperate to capture the depot and the Americans unable to hold it against the overwhelming German armor, destroying the fuel becomes the only way to halt the German advance. The Americans lure the German tanks into an open-field clash where they waste their remaining fuel, then set fire to the depot, immolating the attacking German forces.

Major General Grey and his executive officer Col. Pritchard dismiss Kiley's warnings because they believe a large-scale German counter-offensive is unlikely during winter. Despite Kiley's reconnaissance photos and his interrogation findings suggesting veterans are being held back for a major assault, the Allied command considers the Ardennes front too quiet for such an attack. This critical failure leaves the Americans unprepared when the German offensive launches.

A unit of English-speaking German paratroopers led by Lieutenant Schumacher parachutes behind American lines disguised as American military police. They seize the Our River bridge and swap road signs at a critical junction connecting Amblève, Malmedy, and the Siegfried Line. This deception causes American units to follow altered routes, leading to the Malmedy massacre where American troops are led into an ambush and captured or killed by SS troops.

Hessler dies when a ruptured fuel drum slams into the tank he is driving during the fiery finale. After the Americans flood the roadway with gasoline and ignite it, the resulting cataclysmic blaze engulfs the German tanks. A fuel drum ruptures and is thrown with tremendous force into Hessler's tank, killing him in a brutal, almost mythic moment that symbolizes the fiery end of Germany's last major offensive in the west.

Conrad, Hessler's orderly and driver, has been reassigned to the fuel battalion after the crash that killed Kiley's pilot. Witnessing the destruction of the German forces and the futility of the final battle, Conrad brings up the rear with the fuel column and finally decides he's done with the war. He throws aside his weapons and steps away, representing a weary acknowledgment that some battles cannot be won and that the cost has become too great to bear.

Guffy has a personal complication in the form of a Belgian partner named Louise. When Hessler's tanks overrun Amblève and the siege tightens, Louise is killed in the shelling of the town. This personal tragedy hits Guffy hard amid the larger battlefield horror, adding emotional weight to the brutal fighting and underscoring the human cost of war beyond the strategic battles.

The King Tiger tanks represent a formidable German armored force that could tilt the balance of fighting in the brutal winter campaign. When Allied tanks led by Sergeant Guffy engage the German advance in the Schnee Eifel, they quickly realize the King Tigers' superiority in armor and firepower. The American tanks are forced to pull back to Amblève as they cannot match the German heavy tanks, demonstrating the overwhelming advantage the new King Tigers provide.

The Malmedy massacre occurs because Schumacher's disguised German paratroopers switch road signs at a crucial intersection. Wolenski's unit, following the altered signs, is redirected to Malmedy where they walk directly into an ambush by SS troops. The Americans are quickly overrun and captured, with many being executed. Only Weaver manages to escape. This incident demonstrates both the effectiveness of German deception and the ruthlessness of the offensive.

Kiley continues his recon missions because he's determined to locate the German offensive and provide accurate intelligence to Allied command. After his initial flight photographs Hessler and his staff car, he makes another dangerous pass despite darkness and fog to pinpoint Hessler's position. His persistence pays off when he spots the German armored group, though the return flight ends with the plane being shot down by anti-air fire, killing the pilot and wounding Kiley.
