Gordon, Mark Linn-Baker, and Sydney Wayne, Lisa Hartman, are a hardworking, over-stressed couple who are engaged and decide to take a short cruise to unwind from their demanding lives. Their plans quickly unravel when they get lost and wind up stranded on the remote island of Luhana, a place that tests their patience, loyalty, and sense of ambition.
There, they encounter an American named Bill, Gregory Harrison, who has lived on the island for three years and now owns it. Sydney finds herself drawn to him, drawn by the island’s quiet beauty and the sense of escape it offers from their routine pressures. The trio explores the island together, taking long walks along the shore and swimming in the open ocean, with moments of closeness that blur the lines between friendship, desire, and something more.
Gordon, meanwhile, is sidelined by a back injury after he tries to fashion a boat from a chopped palm tree, a desperate attempt to escape the island. His recovery is slow, but it leads him to a new connection with Tarita, the island’s native girl, who is revealed to be Bill’s girlfriend. Tarita, portrayed by Charlotte Lewis, brings a complex dynamic to the group, mixing warmth with the tension of rival interests. When Sydney uncovers the connection between Bill and Tarita, she reacts with anger and a sense of betrayal, sensing that the balance of the vacation—and their relationships—may shift dramatically.
The atmosphere on Luhana grows competitive, almost warlike, as the couples pass the time with a series of Monopoly games that mimic a strategic battle for affection and control. In the midst of this, Gordon finds himself drawn to Tarita again; a massage she gives him earlier lingers in his memory as his back heals, a small moment that deepens the tension between duty and desire.
Despite the friction, the couples begin to switch partners, seeking what might feel more honest or fulfilling. Yet the dream of freedom is tempered by the truth that Bill has been hiding on the island because he’s wanted for insider trading. Sydney wrestles with a difficult choice: report him to the police or protect the man she’s begun to care for. She initially considers turning him in, only to decide against it when the emotional stakes become clear to her.
As the tide of decisions turns, Sydney and Gordon prepare to head back to the mainland. Yet Gordon abruptly returns to Tarita, leaving Sydney to chart her own course back to New York. The journey home is fraught with longing and doubt, and Sydney discovers she misses Bill more than she anticipated. She boards a ferry that would return her to the island, hoping to find clarity.
Bill unexpectedly appears on the ferry, clean-shaven and dressed in a suit, signaling a return to his former life in the city. He explains that he was framed and that his case has been resolved, a revelation that shifts the weight of everything she believed. In a surprising twist, Gordon has chosen to remain the owner of Luhana, a symbol of the island’s hold over all of them.
The film closes with Sydney and Bill sharing a quiet, tentative kiss, a final moment of reconciliation and possibility after a journey that tested their loyalties, desires, and capacity for change. As the sea winds down and the island’s charms linger, the story leaves them at a crossroads: a life together in a city they once dreamed of, or a future shaped by the island’s strange pull and the choices they’ve already made.
