In the heart of Kashmir, a region deeply scarred by conflict and unrest, Harud tells a poignant and deeply human story about a family stretched to its limits by loss, hope, and the desire for connection. At its core, the film follows the struggles of Rafiq, played by Shahnawaz Bhat, a young man overwhelmed by feelings of helplessness and despair, as he seeks to find meaning and purpose amid the chaos surrounding him.

Rafiq’s journey begins with a desperate attempt to escape the turmoil by crossing the border into Pakistan. However, his attempt fails, forcing him to return to his homeland and a family burdened by tragedy. His brother, Tauqir, who has been missing for four years, remains a haunting presence in their lives. The uncertainty surrounding Tauqir’s fate weighs heavily on their mother, Fatima, portrayed by Shamim Basharat. Despite ongoing pain and frustration, she relentless searches for her son, finding solace only in the hope of one day uncovering the truth about his disappearance or laying him to rest.

Back home, Rafiq’s life is marked by a sense of stagnation; he drifts through days in a haze, devoid of ambition or direction. His interactions with friends, especially Ishaq, who dreams of stardom as a singer on a reality TV show, offer brief moments of respite from his bleak reality. Life continues along this routine until a seemingly insignificant discovery begins to spark hope. During a routine military raid at their house, Rafiq unearths an old camera belonging to his brother, containing a half-used roll of film. Curious, he develops the photographs and finds images of tourists, as well as private pictures of a brother and sister—one of whom is Shaheen, played by Salma Ashai.

Learning that Shaheen also has a missing brother ignites an empathetic bond between her and Rafiq. Driven by this newfound connection, Rafiq and his mother attend a monthly meeting of The Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons (APDP), where Rafiq unexpectedly encounters Shaheen. Their silent understanding hints at shared pain and resilience, providing a glimmer of hope amid their suffering. Meanwhile, Rafiq’s circumstances begin to shift when he takes a job as an office boy for a daring photojournalist, a role that allows him to step into his brother’s shoes and start processing his loss. Through this exposure to the world of journalism and storytelling, Rafiq begins to find some peace and purpose.

The film also explores the struggles of Yusuf, played by Reza Naji, Rafiq’s father and a traffic policeman. Yusuf’s world is darkened by feelings of impotence and despair, as he is overwhelmed by the violence and inefficacy of his routine job. His mental state deteriorates as he witnesses the ongoing violence tearing Kashmir apart, pushing him towards the brink of sanity.

As the story unfolds, a late-night knock on Rafiq’s door signals a turning point. His family’s suspicions are high—late-night visits from friends often signal the presence of militants seeking shelter. When Rafiq’s parents see Ashraf, one of their friends who recently crossed the border and returned as a militant, their fears escalate. In a tragic twist, Yusuf, driven by confusion and despair, wanders out into the night in search of help. His unstable and unpredictable behavior leads to a violent encounter, culminating in a shooting that leaves everyone shaken and highlights the relentless brutality faced by families caught in the crossfire.

Throughout Harud, themes of loss, hope, and resilience are woven into a tapestry of personal and political struggles. The film paints a vivid picture of a community living in constant fear but also holding onto hope through small acts of connection and memory. The performances by the cast, especially Salma Ashai, Reza Naji, Shamim Basharat, and Shahnawaz Bhat, bring authenticity and depth to this intertwined narrative of familial bonds and national turmoil.
