At the Gates

In the climax of Baldur’s Gate 3, the party confronts the Elder Brain beneath Baldur’s Gate after gathering the Netherstones, which are meant to control it. Despite their efforts to dominate the Elder Brain, all checks fail, revealing that the Brain has been manipulating the cult and the spread of tadpoles all along. This setback forces the party to retreat and consider how to confront the creature again, with the option to transform one of their members into a powerful mind flayer to aid in the final fight. The choice of who becomes the enhanced mind flayer impacts the story, especially for characters like Lae’zel and Karlach, and also determines the allegiance of others during the battle.

On their return to Baldur’s Gate, the city is under siege from the Netherbrain and its forces, with chaos reigning as the party fights through hordes of transformed mind flayers and absolute followers. The epic showdown culminates on top of the Nether Brain, where the party’s chosen augmented mind flayer attempts to dominate the Elder Brain. If successful, the player can choose to seize control of the Elder Brain or destroy it. Taking control turns the player into a new form of Absolute, ruling over the world, while destroying it saves the city and ends the threat of mind flayers, with scenes showing citizens fighting back and the companions’ final moments.

The story’s ending varies depending on these choices. If the player takes control, they become the new Absolute, which is seen as the ultimate “evil” ending. If they destroy the Elder Brain, the city is saved, and each companion’s fate is revealed in brief epilogues, showing what they do in the aftermath—ranging from fighting Vlaakith with Lae’zel to helping Karlach with her engine, or pursuing their own goals. If Orpheus becomes a mind flayer, he asks Lae’zel to continue her rebellion, or, if the player refuses, he kills himself. Karlach’s fate hinges on her transformation, either surviving as a mind flayer or succumbing to her engine’s explosion, with alternative options to return to Avernus or stay with Wyll.

Following the main ending, a detailed epilogue is unlocked, showing six months later at a party organized by Withers. Here, the player can see how each character has fared—whether they’ve become adventurers, rulers, or vigilantes—depending on their personal quests and choices made during the game. This post-game reflection adds depth to the characters, highlighting their journeys and the consequences of the player’s decisions. Ultimately, the ending of Baldur’s Gate 3 is shaped by tough choices—whether to dominate, destroy, or leave the Elder Brain behind—that echo through not only the city’s fate but the destinies of each of its characters.
