Arms and the Man (1958) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Arms and the Man (1958), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

The film unfolds in 1885, amid the Bulgarian-Serbian War, as the Bulgarian cavalry led by Lieutenant Sergius Slivitzna [Jan Hendriks] launches a daring assault on a Serbian cannon commanded by the Swiss captain Bluntschli [O.W. Fischer]. The mission looks suicidal, but it unexpectedly ends in Bulgarian success when the cannon cannot fire due to the wrong ammunition. Forced to flee on foot, Bluntschli seeks shelter at the Bulgarian Petkoff residence, where Raina Petkoff [Liselotte Pulver], who is betrothed to Sergius, begins to see the brutal truths of war through the stranger’s presence.

Raina’s initial idealism about Sergius’s supposed great victory falters as she shelters Bluntschli and witnesses the complexities of conflict up close. The war’s aftermath only deepens the contrast between bravado and reality: Sergius is hailed as a hero by the Petkoff family, especially by Raina and her mother, while Major Petkoff [Kurt Kasznar], who values civilian life, greets the celebratory mood with a practical, almost indifferent air toward grand masculine posturing.

As Sergius seeks closeness with Raina, she resists his advances, torn between admiration and a growing disillusionment with their war-time romance. Into this tension steps Louka [Ellen Schwiers], the maid who pursues social advancement and, with a sly charm, seduces Sergius, adding a volatile layer to the household dynamics. Meanwhile, Bluntschli reappears and is warmly welcomed by Major Petkoff, who admires his organizational acumen and asks him to help manage the calculations needed to supply the returning Bulgarian troops.

Bluntschli uses the opportunity to reclaim a sense of belonging by returning the house jacket and staying near Raina, whose feelings toward him become evident. The household atmosphere becomes charged with competing loyalties: Sergius’s jealousy and infidelity are contrasted with Bluntschli’s steadiness and wit, culminating in a duel where Bluntschli demonstrates his fencing prowess and asserts his competence even in personal conflict. Sergius, now free to pursue Louka, shows little regret over losing Raina, while Bluntschli’s presence continues to complicate the romantic triangle.

In a turn of fortune, Bluntschli discovers he has inherited several luxury hotels in Switzerland, making him remarkably wealthy. This unexpected windfall shifts the balance of the relationships surrounding the Petkoff family. With wealth changing the stakes, Raina’s parents come to view Bluntschli as an ideal match for their daughter, and she accepts his proposal, signaling a future where affection, practicality, and social ascent intersect in the wake of war.
