Sonny flies into a rage when he discovers the house he purchased has dramatically lost its value due to the 2008 financial crisis. The argument with Gary, Cassie's aggressive boss, escalates quickly when Gary ridicules Sonny and dismisses his concerns about the property's worth. In a moment of volatile anger, Sonny shoves Gary over the ledge, killing him instantly.

Earlier, Cassie notes the ongoing real estate crisis while on a call about her own home foreclosure, setting up the economic desperation that fuels Sonny's violence.

Sonny summons his ex-wife Vikki to his house under false pretenses, apparently to eliminate her as a witness to his crime.
